So, as many of you know, I've been selling quite a few pieces and I've built up a small war chest. I'm in the mood for new, different and something I've never owned before.
I came across a Custom Builder in the hills of North Carolina named Richie Crowder. A player friend told me about him actually. So, I gave him a call. It was an interesting conversation. Me and my Northern, harsh diction and he with his gentle Appalacia Hills accent. We had a tough time understanding at first but we worked through it.
I bought from him a really fine Dreadnaught. It has a Torrefied Adirondack top, Honduran Mahogany back and sides, Ziricote fingerboard with abalone dot inlays, Ebony binding, Mahogany neck with 1 3/4" nut and a nice beefy feel to the neck, Bolivian Rosewood headstock, gold Waverly tuning machines, and is finished in a nice burst finish. It is the 72nd guitar he's built.
This may be the new guitar thing going on but to me, this blows away any Martin D18 I've ever owned including 2 Custom Shops. I like it so much I ordered another. We're still figuring out all the specs but it will be a heavily bear clawed Sitka Spruce soundboard with Bolivian Rosewood back and sides and a fancier headstock with pretty cool inlays.
Custom guitars are fun but it's tough to get your money out when you sell. But, I'm old enough I figure I've earned the right and I have no desire to sell anyway so..........
Here's some pics of my Mahogany Dread.
