You might give the D'addario Bluegrass strings a shot....I really like them....top 3 are light, bottom 3 are meduim.....well worth the effort I think...after all, who knows how much sound is in that beauty, I figure it'll be about another 20 years to find out... Steffan

Aw shucks

Thanks for the kind words. I posted up a couple more videos, but they are lacking in Guild content. This YouTube stuff is kinda fun.

REAL NAAAS :D

Agree with your comments on the bling, it has the right balance between class and too much. I have always liked the G shield headstock esthetic.
JF55s are a lot of fun, because of tendonitis all I do is strum and sing, the guitar has the rich sound to it that one associates with Guilds, I also agree that it is not especially loud certainly compared to the D25M, but full.
Currently have D'A mediums on it, but will experiment when string changes come due with Bluegrass or New/True mediums where the Es and B are mediums and the others are lights.

Holy thread resurrection, Batman! I should give an update on this guitar. I have to admit, I haven't really given it the play time it deserves. I never could put my finger on it, it just wasn't "doing it" for me. That is, until a couple of weeks ago. It finally dawned on me that the action on this guitar was just a bit too high for me. I took down the saddle a little bit, and it absolutely transformed the guitar. 12th fret action on the low E is right about 6/64", and the neck is adjusted with just enough relief to play pretty darn hard without buzzing. A perfect setup. The JF55 is the first guitar I reach for lately. It sounds wonderful, and the playability is now on par with my Taylors. Saddle height is acceptable, though I'd probably like a little more break angle on the saddle. I guess for a 17 year old guitar, it's not that bad.

Having said that, it has been exceedingly wet in Arkansas this whole year, but particularly this fall. Normal yearly rainfall in this area is about 40", and we have had nearly 70" this year. We had a record ~16" of rain in October, and it was also one of the coolest Octobers on record, so there hasn't been any a/c running to take humidity out of the house. It may be possible that the guitar has swelled a little bit, and the action may drop some this winter when the heat is running a lot. I'll monitor it carefully - I have a beautiful new polished bone saddle blank ready to go if I need to raise the action back up a little bit.

So are the medium Elixirs still doing the trick for you? It's about time I changed strings on my JF55 and I'm looking for something new to try, instead of the usual PB D'addario mediums.

pickoid, you might want to try Thomastik Spectrums for a real change of pace. If you like the PB sound, be sure to try John Pearse PBs too... Uncoated (and squeaky), but very nice.

I'm using DR Sunbeams on the Guild, and also on my maple Taylor. These are great strings. I'm using lights (12-54) on both of these guitars at the moment, with good results. Chazmo, I agree with you on the John Pearse phosphors. They sound great for sure. The price on the Thomastik strings has scared me off thusfar.

Agreed on all counts.

By the way, the Thomastiks are unique as far as I know... They're a cross between silk & steel and normal wound strings. Frosty suggested them for the F-50R, and I've been enjoying a couple of sets as a change of pace. Sometimes they go on sale on Strings & Beyond. In general, though, I seem to gravitate toward phos. bronze strings.
