Good news, Guild people. I am the new owner of forum member TaylorMartinGuild's JF55. It's a 1993 model, and it's in extra nice shape. I've wanted a Guild rosewood jumbo for at least 20 years, and finally I have one. I've been bonding with it a little bit today - will have more to report later. I'll post a few pics for now, then I gotta go play my guitar.

Welcome aboard Pickoid. TMG is a great LTGer; no better place to transact a great Guild than here. Enjoy and we look forward to more posts!

I can't believe how fast USPS got her to you.
It was less than 24 hours from Utah to you.
She looks great!
I know that she has a great new home and now my quest begins for a D55.
There were 4 of them that I was interested in last week and today, all of them are gone.
Used Guilds sure seem to move fast.
I'll just have to have a little patience and see what shows up.

Enjoy your new baby,
TMG.

Hey Pickoid...
I had the pleasure of playing your JF-55 when TMG and I got together a couple months ago... a real "sweetie!" Enjoy! Dave

Don't know if it fits your budget or not, but that D-66 on ebay probably blows most D-55s away.

A few thoughts after spending some quality time with the JF55. I wanted to put fresh strings on the guitar right away - I thought I had a set of medium Elixirs at home but alas, I did not. I've never claimed that Elixirs have the best tone, but I'm used to them so they can at least serve as a benchmark. Anyway, the strings on it are D'addario phosphor mediums. They don't look too old but it's sometimes hard to tell by looking. I'm interested to see what a string change might accomplish.

In terms of volume, the Guild lags my other guitars a little bit. That's not too unexpected, TMG told me that was his experience with it. The Guild really seems to have a lot of sustain, compared to my other guitars (hog, maple, and laminate). I would expect that with the rosewood and the jumbo body. When I fingerpick it in dropped-D tuning, that low bass D note seems to hang out there for a long time, which is really nice.

The action is fine for me - no need to mess with any setup for the time being. The neck is a good size, definitely chunkier than the Taylor neck, but what isn't? That's not a bad thing for me, I have some real meaty paws.

Most of all, I'm just struck by how beautiful the thing is. It is such a classy looking guitar. Plenty of bling, but not too much. I have always loved the look of the Guild "style 55" appointments. The neck inlays are just beyond gorgeous. And I have to think the Guild headstock with the G-shield and binding is the best looking headstock ever. It just strikes you when you walk into the room.

Also, the case is in such good shape, it makes me wonder if it's original to the guitar. It's a TKL hardshell case with black pebble texture and a Guild "Made to be Played" brass tag on it. The inside is green plush. Doesn't have a single scratch on it. For some reason, I can't seem walk through a door without banging my case on the door frame, so my cases tend to show some wear. Regardless, you couldn't ask for a nicer case.

Will update when I get some fresh strings on it.

Pickoid,
I don't remember if I told you that when I bought the guitar, the action was too low for me.
I replaced the saddle with a bone saddle, that I cut myself.
It is at least 1/16" taller than the saddle that was in the guitar when I bought it.
I now wonder if I have the break angle correct on the saddle?
Frosty stated that the correct break angle is a factor in the volume that a guitar has.
So can anyone tell from any of the photos, if the break angle looks correct?

TMG - rest easy, the break angle on the JF55 is fine. By raising the saddle, you increased the break angle, which is a good thing. I suppose it's possible to have too much break angle, which might in some way impair the tone, but I've never seen a guitar with that much saddle height. More likely, a saddle that high might tend to rotate against the front of the saddle slot, tending to crack the front off the bridge.

When the saddle is too low, the strings have very little break over the saddle, and don't impart enough downward force on the saddle. That can be partially overcome by cutting string slots in the bridge behind the saddle, but that's really just a technique to delay a needed neck reset.

You've given me something to look at though - I will check the saddle to see that it is perfectly flat along the bottom and in full contact with the saddle slot. That could impact tone/volume as well.

I changed the strings on the JF55 to some Elixir phosphor bronze mediums last night, which were a nice improvement, IMO. If nothing else, I'm just used to the feel of the coated strings at this point. When I play non-coated strings it seems like I produce way too much string squeak. I also took a look at the saddle. The bottom of the saddle was nice and flat, and the whole thing fit well in the slot, so no problems there. I give it a clean bill of health.

I'm wanting to get my video camera and tripod set up sometime this weekend. If I get a chance, I'll post up a couple of video clips.
