Hi Everyone,

Glad to see there's a place where these fantastic guitars can be admired and discussed with others.

I purchased my first Guild at the beginning of July, from the 'bay. A 1972 Guild S-100 Deluxe, in Cherry finish.
I'll admit that I had actually been looking for an S-300D, and after a couple of years never being able to find one locally, I turned to that popular online auction place... I had my eye on an S-300AD, got in an unexpected bidding war (hopefully with none of you - if so, apologies - I wasn't a member at the time), and at the last second...lost. Wallowing in my defeat, this S-100 was listed shortly thereafter to take all my troubles away. Now it seems like it was meant to be. This thing is simply incredible.

The listing for this guitar was vague, and the pictures--not very good. I took a chance. Yes, it does show questionable scuffs and scratches....but it plays like a dream. Frets show absolutely no signs of wear, and these HB-1s are pure magic. I've grown to appreciate the mysterious blemishes, and the HB-1's continue to surprise me every time I plug in.

I believe this is a 1972, with a serial number of 70067.

Let's see if I can figure out how to attach a picture, or two.

I am still looking for an S-300. But, an acoustic is next on the list; thinking a D25/D30/GF25. I bought this S-60 recently, and would ideally like to trade it for one of the Guild acoustics that I mentioned. Will list it in the appropriate board within the next week? Here's a shot of it as well.

Let me be the first to welcome you to the show, acm! Got yourself a couple of sweet axes there, and it's always nice to have another DeLuxe owner on board. Nice job attaching those sure to be drool-inducing photos, too.

Nice entrance acm, welcome aboard. Nice couple of guitars there. Does the S-60 sound much different to the S-100 in the bridge position? All the ingredients are there.

I'm also looking to join the DeLuxe club in a way , shortly.

Hey Zelja, there is not a huge difference in the S-60's sound compared to the S-100 in the bridge position. The biggest difference is the way the strings feel. Because of the S-100's "Guildsby" the strings feel much softer and flexible, as opposed to the S-60 with the stop tailpiece making the playing feel stiff in comparison. Not a bad thing; the S-60 feels more like a "rock" guitar, while the S-100 Deluxe feels capable of just about anything - the "Guildsby" adds a little warmth to the mix. The S-60 is at its best when you want super low action, a snap, a scream, and/or sustain.

Hope that helps!

Thanks acm. Yeah, the S-6- seems like a no frills rock machine. A good hunk of hog & a HB-1 is all you need sometimes!

I also wonder if the neck angle is different on the late 70s S-60s (which I assume yours is) compared to the early 70's S-100 (the late 70s S-100 neck angle is different as is the position of the stop tail, which is the same as that on your S-60).

Zelja,

See pics for differences in the neck angles. I can also tell you that the S-60 neck is chunkier and fits nicely in my palm, where as the S-100 neck is slimmer and perhaps a bit quicker/easier to stretch for further away frets. The bridge for the S-60 is almost all the way up, and the bridge on the S-100 is bottomed out.

Thanks acm! Yep, seems the construction of the S-60 is as per the later S-100s. Good to know.

I guess if the S60 etc came out in the late 70s then they constructed them in a similar way to how the S-100s were at the time - they were changed in about '75 (or '76 at the latest) I think.
