I saw him last night in Milwaukee. From the balcony, I couldn't make out what the "other" guitar was...someone next to me had binocs so I got a good look. It's an M-20! He had a soundhole pickup in it and was using some effects to get some pretty spooky tones. Apparently it's used on his newest studio release. I think he played three songs with it. The rest were on his Martin D-35. He didn't let "Hank" out of the stable this time.

The show was really, really excellent overall. My first time seeing him (previously shying away from either big venues or high ticket prices.)

I'm envious... Sure wish Neil would make it to San Antonio one day soon... Has the new album been released?

Wonder if it was vintage or a newer one... I would think he would use an older one. I have one and I could see him using it. Awesome! I am such a Neil fan. I'm jealous... I gotta go see him someday.

Rumor has it that the M-20 is not his, but rather his producer's (Danny Lanois?)

My bad, Martin D-45 not D-35.

I did not like Neil Young when I was younger, but over the last 15 years or so he has become one of my favorites. Tickets were $$$$, but in my opinion well worth it. I was truly in awe. Hearing him play "Old Man" and sounding as fresh as he did nearly 40 years ago was really amazing. To me, he didn't sound 64 years old at all. The songs he played from the upcoming release were very good. Apparently the M-20 will be an integral part of that release. Don't know when it's due out but I'll be gettin' it fer sure!

Go Neil Go.

Neil's the best, what he can do with some simple chords I find amazing. His acoustic shows are always great.

How cool is that?! He could probably get e new Martin 000-15M for free, but he chooses the vintage Guild. That says a lot! There is another singer song writer who is touring with a 65' Guild M20 right now, but can;t think of his name. Glad I found one when I did.

William Fitzsimons would be the chap you are thinking of perhaps. He plays a 65 M20 (like ours), his Sparrow and the crow album is excellent and has also just been released on vinyl !!

Cheers, Ian

Ian,

Could this be the chap & guitar of which you speak???

Guitar looks to be missing a pickguard ??? Not that it needs one, appears William has a soft touch.

yep that's the fella. He's good isnt he, my guitar is a complete virgin up at that end of the fretboard he's playing though. Another one worth checking out is a guy called Nic Jones, His Penguin Eggs album has just been re released (also available on Vinyl). No M20 content though as he played a flyde. Album was originally released in 1980 been deleted since forever, but is now available again. Well worth a listen

Cheers, Ian

Penguin eggs !! Now THAT one Ive heard of ( mainly whilst looking up songs that I like to play Chords, That album often appears) ...and thats great news of a rerelease, Ill have to get that one too. Looks like its off to the AMAZON for me! The only Fitzsimmons album on Aussie ebay ( sparrow and crow) would be coming out of USA ( still the price was good enough....but on CD )so I might go that way. That guy is amazing.........Great moody stuff for the reflective mind.
His playing alot in open D intrigues me.great sound, and yea, that part of my F20 fret board ( well ALL my guitars!)is 'uncharted rehlm' territory. Maybe oneday.we live in hope

 Hey I'm pretty impressed too Ian!.....I'm used to being all on my lonesome down here. Didnt think ANYONE would be mentioning THAT one! We're a very quiet Folk army, laying in waiting for the NEXT great Folk revival!
I will certainly be ordering myself a copy!
Speaking of obscurities......( though way less obscure) Did you ever find a site with most of the songs and chords to the Harry Smith Anthology? Ive been searching all around, and have gotten many of the songs from differant sources.but never a "songbook' of such ( I have had to make my own........Seems like a good idea for someone to put one together! A cool official one.with Illustrations by Crumb!
Ill let you know when I get MY copy!

Back to bluepen's original post, and YES he's working with Lanois! Great tip, bluepen. Lanois' guitar playing is pretty much all owed to early Neil Young. (Of course, they're both Canadians) Let's hope Daniel reigns him in a little and makes him work on the songs. Neil hasn't made a very good record in 20 years. And I'm a HUGE early Neil Young fan! Neil's produced everything essentially since Jack Nitzsche on his first solo record. (Although one of my bands did do a demo with Heart of Gold producer Elliot Mazer, at Atlantic, our labels, insistence; was okay). Yeah, he often played Martin D-45s with CSN&Y, and pre-war D45s I might add. Listen to Deja Vu, or Crosby's first solo record and you'll hear acoustic guitar as good as it's ever been recorded, ever. Neil actually owns Hank Williams' Martin D28, but I doubt he tours with it, though it sure looks like it in some recent photos I've seen. Anyway, if he's touring playing a Guild, well, that's an extremely high compliment!. CSN&Y have as good acoustic guitars as any musicians in the world. We're talking almost unaffordable Martins. So the guitars he chooses, that's a pretty important guitar in rock terms. I've met him a few times, his band came to see my band play when they were in town in the mid 70s, and he's a great figure, no doubt.

Ok NOW i remember..the song i was searching was "The Drowned Lovers" ( i think that is 'the Clyde waters' on Penguin eggs) so................
Go to youtube, type in "DROWNED LOVERS, Kate Rusby", That is a real treat :D Just BEAUTIFUL.............haunting......
now for the chords, pretty simple repeat of C-F-C----G7, C-F-C--G7-C, but check out the guy on youtube, Type in "12 string guitar, the drowned lovers". Here youll get the lyrics and chords as he sings it! Pretty funny guy, playing his Italian ECO guitars
Lastly Ian, just searching " the drowned lovers, lyrics" will give you written lyric to print out!
Mate, at least,......It's a start!
I ordered my copy of Penguin eggs TODAY! thanks for the heads up!

Yikes, these are some fightin' words. If you mean a complete record, yeah his first few albums were pretty complete "records" compared to his recent stuff. But he has written some great songs in the last 20 years, Harvest Moon being his best song ever in my opinion.

Since the late 70s Neil has had music come poring out and he really hasn't done a good job of editing out some of the marginal stuff, but mixed in all that music are some gems. I'm not a huge fan of his electric stuff, but he seems pretty prolific at generating a lot of music in that vein also.

This raises another point for discussion. I've heard people say that true genius and best output occurs in ones 20s. This goes for artists, scientists, etc. Einstein had his E-=MC2 in his 20s. this seem generally true of musicians, too.
