Welcome back, indeed ... cue the music

Looks fabulous, and I love that TRC and three-line Chesterfield logo! I've said it before but I'll say it again: I've never been a huge fan of black guitars because I like the contrast of the black pickup rings, pickguard and headstock inlay against a non-black body. But that thing is flat-out sexy. All hail to the Blacknight! :D

Too early for a phase switch. They weren't added until 1972 or 1973. Question: When did they switch from TRC's like the Blacknight's ...

...to the more familiar looking (albeit upside down in this example) TRC?

Cool git, Treem. Was this the first year? of the S-100? And do you know if this came from Westerly or from Hoboken?

I'm thinking it's Westerly, as my black guitar, built a year later, is Westerly.

Super cool find, Treem! Dead sexy black guitar you have there, congratulations.

Quick question, though... those Grovers don't look original to me... are they?

Grovers could be original but they also used some kind of open-backs. I think the metal TRC was only in '70. Possibly '71. Phase switches were optional at this time or shortly after. Standard from '72 on. Definitely Westerly. One more thing - check the tailpiece. the corners were slightly rounded off at this time and had sharp corners soon after.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you all! TF - thank you for msuic cue, that show is as classic as a vintage S100!

The Grovers are not the OGs on this baby, I could see holes! and I really dig the metal TRC, maybe leftovers from Hoboken? Im cool without the Phase switch but a toggle switch is a MUST! Help!

I haven't unscrewed it yet but I will probably this weekend. Strings are good for now. Tailpiece is rounded off. Good to know its one of the first year Westerly!

and Definitely got the TONE to die for!

Cheers and Blessings!

The original tuners may have looked like this.

That's similar to what my original tuners looked like, especially on the back. The tuning heads themselves look a bit different, although I can't say for sure; they were replaced with Grovers a long time ago now and I was too young and foolish to stipulate that I be able to keep the old tuners. At any rate, the Grovers work fine and look great on the guitar.

Sure thing, Treem... here's some old pix. The guitar in question is currently in storage. I'll do a C/U of the headstock soon, though.

It's funny. You have guys on this board who own multiple S100s. Won't say I'm not envious, but in a very real way it makes me all the more grateful that I have this single, oddball specimen... most of my guitars could burn and I'd get over it - eventually - but this one is special to me.
