I don't think we're in disagreement, Joe. I never said that using guitar stands or hanging a guitar on a wall was a problem. Every guitar store you walk into has their guitars on stands, or hanging on walls, or both. No store that I know of keeps them in cases!
But every store, or every decent store anyway, also humidifies. The Music Emporium in Lexington, one of the foremost acoustic instrument stores in the country, keeps their entire property humidified. As does Mandolin Brothers and Dusty Strings, of the big ones I've been in in the last six months or so.
All others that I've been in, big or small, corporate or mom-and-pop, for going on 10 years or more, have separate rooms for acoustic instruments, and those rooms are humidified. (You can feel the change in humidity as soon as you walk through the door.)
I can't humidify my entire house, so I keep my guitars in cases, with humidifiers in the soundholes.
Craig asked what people recommended -- that's what I recommend.
If someone has the luxury of being able to control the humidity level in their house or in the room where they keep their guitars, or they live in an area of the country where the humidity level is perfect year round, great, and more power to 'em!
Put 'em on stands, on the wall, hang 'em from the chandelier!
There's more discussion of this topic -- as there is every year at this time -- right now under the topic: "Hygrometers and humidifiers."
Peace, brother.
