I don't think we're in disagreement, Joe. I never said that using guitar stands or hanging a guitar on a wall was a problem. Every guitar store you walk into has their guitars on stands, or hanging on walls, or both. No store that I know of keeps them in cases!

But every store, or every decent store anyway, also humidifies. The Music Emporium in Lexington, one of the foremost acoustic instrument stores in the country, keeps their entire property humidified. As does Mandolin Brothers and Dusty Strings, of the big ones I've been in in the last six months or so.

All others that I've been in, big or small, corporate or mom-and-pop, for going on 10 years or more, have separate rooms for acoustic instruments, and those rooms are humidified. (You can feel the change in humidity as soon as you walk through the door.)

I can't humidify my entire house, so I keep my guitars in cases, with humidifiers in the soundholes.

Craig asked what people recommended -- that's what I recommend.

If someone has the luxury of being able to control the humidity level in their house or in the room where they keep their guitars, or they live in an area of the country where the humidity level is perfect year round, great, and more power to 'em!

Put 'em on stands, on the wall, hang 'em from the chandelier!

There's more discussion of this topic -- as there is every year at this time -- right now under the topic: "Hygrometers and humidifiers."

Peace, brother.

Glenn//.

My D50 hangs within my reach, year round, and has been well cared for from Day One. If I didn't already own it, I'd buy it!
Cheers,
Joe
Sell it to your wife with a buyback clause and buy it back. Then it could be kinda like a second honeymoon, kinda like that other guy with the D50 the other day...you know that guy with a funny dogs name... :?

I've been following all the cross-talk amongst repondants to this post. Its all helpful. I can appreciate the salesman at Sweetwater (Indiana), after buying my new F512 he explained the importaance of temp/ humidity control.

He apparently did appreciate a nice guitar, and didn't want to see me walk away and ruin it. At that time the humidity in my house was at about 46 per cent, and I wondered why I just bought a humidifier for my guitar room.

Now I know, since the humidity will jump about 10-15% throughout the day unless I control it.

But the "hang it, or case it" was my latest concern. I am fortunate in that my house has hot water heat. With the guitars away from the heat source, I also have very little dust circulatiing.

And it makes sense to me to hang the guitar (from my "Jamstand" rack) when not in the case. A guitar propped agaist the wall worries me concerning possible stress to the neck.

THE MOST IMPORTANT thing I have learned to do is to always remove a guitar from the case in an area that is not cramped. I have gigged with too many players that like "Wille Nelson" guitars (all beat up). and one guy's "trade mark" axe has got lots of duct tape holding the body together.

I don't even like to leave a finger print on any of my guitars or drums. I also always wear a long sleeve shirt now, so I never put skin rib on the guitar finish.

I don't have a fettish, I just dislike seeing most other local guitar players treating their stuff like junk. I am not eager to get their advice, also no one else owns a nice Guild either.
