i have a NOS 1979 Guild/CTS pot. it is 200K. part 004029.
can this be used in the neck position of a 60s-70s Guild bass? it is for tone, not volume, correct?
is there a better use for the pot?
thanks!
The old Fender-Dearmond wiring diagrams for the Starfire II bass shows all four pots (2-vol/2-tone) as 500K pots. The majority of those schematics for the archtops from this era show the tone pots as 200K. When rewiring my T-100D, I remember searching everywhere for 200K Guild pots, which weren't so easy to find a few years back.
From this, and considering the usual practices with guitar wiring, I wouldn't recommend the 200K for a volume pot, but rather for a tone. Also, check the taper with a multimeter to see if it's linear or audio (logarithmic). I'm guessing it's most likely an audio taper. I'm pretty certain that standard Fender bass wiring uses 250K, audio taper pots for the tone positions. You could use as a tone pot for both bass or regular guitar, depending on your tastes.
