New dishwasher day!

So it is supposed to be in tomorrow. Black stainless steel front, a non-standard option. Mrs. Dread insisted that it match our fridge and I agreed.. By the way, refrigerator magnets don't stick to stainless. Anyway, we ordered the dishwasher through Lowes in January! There is a long lead time on special orders somehow connected to Covid 19. And I get that.

They are installing it too, we already paid for everything so all we need to do is watch them install it. And boy do we need a new dishwasher!.

As always, hats off to Lowes for giving Veterans 10% off all the time, and for having special Veterans' parking spots at their stores!

Yeah, they used to give 10% on sale items, snagged a serious Craftsman 52 inch top and bottom tool box set, cabinet and work bench marked down and with the discount. I went to get a set of drawers to attach to the work bench, and they changed their policy and wouldn't give me the additional discount.

Still, our Lowes here is pretty good. I like the buy online and they have it ready for pickup.

Our last new dishwasher was a Kenmore and man that thing was quiet. Got a convection oven also, and I miss that thing. It was great for roasting things.

Congrats! We're a fan of Bosch for dishwashers. It's amazing how quiet they've become.

When they came and installed it, the guy gave me some story about how the new floor had been installed in such a way that there was no way to get the old dishwasher out. I looked at it, got it out right in front of him, then let him finish the job.

I'm not a huge fan of Lowes over Home Depot, but I absolutely support the Veterans support they offer. I believe they both allow dogs in the store which is great, but we haven't had the courage to bring Sully to either because I have visions of him knocking over an entire row of shelves and watching the whole store collapse domino-style.

A Bosch will almost certainly be a replacement I'll make soon for the pitiful GE Profile dishwasher that I have been living with for 15 years. I really don't like that thing, never have.

We've had a Bosch dishwasher for a while. Pretty quiet. It doesn't have a dry cycle or heating element to dry things. The inside is all stainless steel, I think and it reflects the heat of all the water back for quite some time after the washer stops to "dry" the dishes. I've gotten used to tipping things over before I put them back in the cupboards, as water could have pooled on top of cups and things.

Another two thumbs up for a Bosch dishwasher. Extraordinarily quiet, & it works well.

I think ours has a couple of drying cycles, depending upon how much energy you wish to use (or conserve). I typically have to dry a little leftover water out of cupped things (like the bottom of a coffee mug that was sitting on a horizontal part of a dish rack). But most items are perfectly dry.

I've lived all over and sometimes the Lowes is better, and sometimes the Home Depot is better. Here it's Lowes. The Home Depot here blows chunks.

We replaced our dishwasher around 18 years ago. It still worked well but was loud and had some rust. They put the new one in and hauled the old one off "free of charge".

I did not like the new one because of the water pooling on things. If the old one had still been here I would have yanked the new one out, sent it back to the store (they guaranteed satisfaction), and reinstalled the old one, noise and all.

The old one got so hot that plastic things would sometimes melt. "What's that smell? I've smelled it before. Oh! Melting plastic in the dishwasher!" and I'd get the plastic out and close the door so it could finish drying the dishes. Melted plastic didn't bother me, it was only plastic and only melted if it was in the bottom rack, or if it fell through the rack into the bottom of the dishwasher.

Everything not melted was bone dry.

Are there any dishwashers that can completely dry the dishes anymore?

I'm sure there are, but it's energy efficiency rating on the yellow sticker would go down. Heating takes more electricity. And as mentioned, plastic melts. The only things that stay wet in ours are small things that tip over during the wash, like small cups or the bottom of coffee cups.

All appliances except the fridge are 20 years or older here, which is why the home warranty won't cover them, which is also why we got rid of the home warranty. The dishwasher is an old Whirlpool that only leaks out the front door when I remove the small bowel at the left front corner. When the bowl is there, it's super water tight! It does an okay job, mostly because I practically wash the dishes first before loading. Also, it's noisy as HELL!! But since it's out in the kitchen it doesn't bother me too much. The best drying is done when it first starts the drying cycle and I remember to go in and yank the door open and empty anything that's turned over (mostly light weight plastic stuff that I mostly hand wash anyway) and allow all the steam from the hot wash and rinse to escape into the house to boost the humidity here (always helpful) and then close it and allow to dry with all that moisture gone. The dishwasher is also in a bad spot in the corner to the left of the sink. All the cupboards are below and above in that corner and you can't put stuff away, you just have to pile it, then close the DW and then put stuff away. Also, the oven isn't part of the cooktop, it's across the room underneath the countertop to the right of the sink. Why OH WHY?? It's so low to the ground that the oven clock has never been set by either of us, and we just use it to store pans and stuff. When the kitchen gets redone (hopefully soon) all this stuff will be fixed and I can resume a normal life.

Just curious, will you relocate your new dishwasher to the right of the sink? I had one apartment where the dishwasher was left of the sink and I learned it was not my preference.

I would wonder if the person who designed your kitchen cooked much.

Would love to see before and after pictures. Will you be designing the redo?

Same thing happened with an over the stove microwave they delivered. Said they were unable to install it. I had my handyman do it for less.

Leaving it where it is, to the left of the sink. The oven is already to the right of the sink.

We just remodeled a few years ago, including hardwood mahogany plank flooring, granite countertops, tile backsplash. I'll have to do some digging to find a photo.

I bought a top-of-the-line Whirlpool eight years ago. One feature was, its quietness, and it is.

we got rid of the home warranty.

<veer>I've never seen a home warranty that was useful to me. The one's I saw required me to use their service people, on their schedule and all with a deductible that as sometimes higher than getting "my people" to do the job. If I didn't know "who to call" it might have been useful but no one I know who bought one thinks they saved money. That said, as a home seller I will gladly buy a home warranty that transfers to the buyer because it easies their anxiety<veer>

All my dishwashers have been on the right side of the sink. I don't think I care about which side as much as I care about reaching counter space and cabinets when I am unloading it. I speak as a right hander who does not load the dishwasher as much as Mrs. Fro. would like.

The same home warranty company was amazing with our previous home!! We got a new pool heater, new water heater, new garbage disposal, new microwave/stove hood, plus many, many more!! Each of those cost us $65! So when we used the same company for this townhouse, it came as a total shock that so many terms and rules had changed. Obviously they were too generous and weren't making enough money. But now that we know during the 3 years we've been here that they won't cover anything, they're history.

If you were asking me, YES!! The kitchen is small and really doesn't give a lot of options. Which is fine, but why they'd not use an oven/stove/hood/microwave combo and randomly throw the oven way over on the other side near the dining room is beyond me!! So goals are solid surface countertop/backsplash, open large farm style sink, dishwater over to the right of the sink where they stuck the oven. That's pretty much it. I hate grout and tiles on a countertop. Countertop will be quartz probably. Granite is pretty but too porous. Oh plus get rid of the fluorescent tubes behind crinkle texture plastic panels and replace with spots, and under cabinet lighting. They actually put a ceiling fan in the middle of a small kitchen with blades turning far to close to my head for comfort!

My kitchen is not as user friendly as I would like. Severely lacking in counter space and either there's not enough storage or I have too much stuff, but probably both. The problem is I use my stuff so it's hard to cull. Now whenever I'm considering something else for the kitchen I have to answer the "where am I going to put it" question.

The garden is starting to come in, too, so there are buckets of vegetables to be dealt with. It seems like they are everywhere even when there are only two or three, and for the next few weeks, at least, it's only going to increase.
