New Drum Day! I had a snare built for my son in the late 90s, and that took him through his final years at High school, a year-long tour with the broadway production of Victor Victoria. several college auditions, and a degree in percussion at the San Francisco Conservatory. It's now on "loan" to me.

I always though it would be cool to build a bass drum to match, and finally got it done. It's a 10"X20" semi-compact style drum by master builder Keith Larsen of Baltimore Drum. Final assembly happened this weekend. Had to match a 25 year old finish (Maple honey gloss) , and it came out perfectly. Not planning to join a band (my lat pro gigs were 40 years ago) , but you never know...

Very cool! What kind of wood was used - maple - or is that just the stain color? I’d love to see some closeups.

Both my brother and his grown daughter are drummers, though I believe they use production gear. For some reason it never occurred to me that custom drums was a thing. Why would it not be though since most other instruments have an artisan custom industry. Do you have plans to add some toms?

It's a maple shell. Hardware (lugs, hoop clips and spurs are custom machined and plated. Not planning to grow the kit - keeping it simple with just a bass and snare. I have a small 11X14 floor tom I can use if needed, but I like the idea of limiting the hardware - been there done that. Here's an inspiration photo I thought was cool on a few levels.

Sweet! You're a good dad. I love the tight punch of a 20" bass drum. It's the size my son plays too, but ours is of far inferior quality. I did, however, recently buy him a decent Amber Pig Lite Pork Pie Snare, which he really wanted.
