Hi All,

Well, I think this is the end of the GAS attack (for the time being anyway), but this guitar just surfaced on NY's Craigslist last night and I couldn't resist. I had some money left in the GAS fund after coming in well under budget with the D25-12, and I've been wanting a parlor size guitar for a while now. Just didn't find the right one. This particular guitar was bought in the early '90s by a woman in Greenwich Village who bought it and then never played it! Luckily, she had the sense to de-tension the strings while it sat in the case for the last eighteen years or so. I went in to see it this morning and literally found a museum piece.

As you can see in this picture, there is not a mark on the face of the guitar (or anywhere else that I can see). It was pretty dirty though, and required a good cleaning.

Both the upper and lower bouts are absolutely like new.

The back, too. What you see there are reflections from the lawn.

Here's where my question for Hans comes in. The serial number is very odd,

4448102581_d243ef1d16_o.jpg

and doesn't show up in any of the Guild serial number databases that I can find. The woman I bought it from says it's from the early '90s, which I believe, but all the F20s that were manufactured at that time had serial numbers starting with "FA", and also the ones made in the '80s. I'd like to know a little bit more of the history of this instrument, as I am really enjoying it already. It has a huge voice for such a little axe. It even came with the impossible-to-find case!

Add another Westerly...

Sandy!

Hello twocorgis,

What you have is one of the prototypes for the 'reissue' F-20 that were done at the very end of 1993.
These were not really prototypes, since the F-20 had been produced off and on during this period, but some were done before they started a 'more-or-less' regular production again in 1994.

Hope you will like the guitar!

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Thanks so much for the info, Hans. I guess this doesn't make it rare, but I have to admit that I've never seen a Guild in my admittedly limited experience with such an unusual serial number.

And I am loving the guitar already! The price was right, too. I didn't fell bad this time because this woman that I bought it from was (shall we say) well-to-do, and wasn't selling it to fund surgery...

After taking a better look, the case isn't correct. It's loose in there :(

She bought it a Sam Ash. It figures.

Group case buy from that Canadian outfit?

Rock on Sandy.
That's just an outrageous score on a beautiful Guild.

That's why I love Guilds. Value compared to Taylor/Martin/Gibson. I got two really nice Guilds for about half the price of one of them. :D

But don't be too quick to dismiss....the GAS!

Enjoy,
Joe

Thanks, Joe. GAS never really goes away, it just ebbs and flows. 8)

And you've ridden a pretty decent flow for the past few days!
Surf's up!

I'm just a flash in the pan next to you guys! It is addicting, though,

Looks like a great find and in great condition too. I love small bodied Guilds. An F20 is at the very top of my wish list. Enjoy!

Beautiful guitar. So what can one expect to pay for an F20? Are many around. Did they make any with sunburst finish. What is the body depth? See that, you blessed the other guy and someone blessed you... it just works.
Ltp62... or just Bob

I love it! I strung it up with some DR Rare mediums, and there's just a massive sound that comes out of it for such a small instrument. Very comfortable to play, and a handy size. Body depth on mine is a bit over 4" with the arched back. I'm pretty sure that earlier examples didn't have the arched back. I don't think that there's all that many around, but they do pop up here and there. I paid $550, which I think was a good price. I just saw a used Hoboken '64 sunburst F20 at a nearby GC for $1500! Perhaps others can chime in here. I'm not really sure what the going rate is for these. I'm pleased with my purchase, though.

That looks like a really sweet little Guild. Nice score!

And that serial number... you may have the James Bond Guild, there. 007

$550 is a RIDICULOUSLY good price, especially for one in anything close to as good of shape as that baby is.
