Hello,

For my first post I'd like to announce I'm getting my first Guild guitar this weekend. I'm driving 5 hours this coming Friday to purchase a 1978 Guild D-25M. I've been waiting for the right time (financial circumstances) to arise to buy this guitar for over a year now and the time has finally come. I can't explain how excited I am to be getting this after waiting and wanting for so long. I have some pictures the seller sent me. Here they are:

My Guild will be joining the company of a 1973 Martin D-35 and a 2006 Taylor 415.

I can hardly wait for this weekend so I can go get this thing, I am excited.

Welcome Welcome Welcome,

This is a great place and an endless resource for anything Guild...and a few other things. I just joined also, and just bought my first American Guild, a '94 D25. It sure is a great dread. You will have to let us know how your "new" D25 holds up to your old Martin.

Welcome to LTG. :D :D

Congrats on the new member of the herd. Pretty nice company she'll be in.

I'll second that request for a comparision to the D35.

Welcome NeilYoungFan from another Neil Young fan. That's one good looking D-25 and a spittin' image of my '79. If you ever get tired of it, I could use another one, so......

Enjoy,
Joe

Hello neilyoungfan,

Welcome! I can tell you're exited about getting your D-25M.

Did look at the photos and at first glance I would say that your guitar has a mahogany top, which would be unusual for a D-25 from 1978. I've seen a couple of D-25s with mahogany tops from a later date than what is usually considered the 'change-over-to-spruce' date, but not as late as from 1978 yet.
Maybe it's just the quality of the photo. Let's wait till you have the guitar and we'll see if it really is what it looks like to me now.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Wow guys, thanks for a really great warm reception all across the board.

I'll be posting some more pics of the D-25 once I get it and can take my own photos.

What would this mean as far as the sound goes? I don't believe I've ever played a 'hog topped guitar before.

Also the SN is 157xxx which would date it at '77, not '78. However, aren't their some discrepancies among the accuracy of SN's sometimes?

Yes, that would make it an instrument from 1977.
As far as the accuracy of serial numbers is concerned, the serial numbers are usually quite accurate even though mistakes were made in applying the serial numbers. It's the serial number lists that are not always accurate and because instruments do not get a serial number at the end of the production line when the instrument is completed, the serial number only tells us that a guitar cannot be older than the date that the serial number was stamped into the back of the headstock. There can be quite some time between the instrument getting a serial number and the moment that the instrument is set up in 'final assembly' where it becomes a musical instrument that can be played.

As far as the species of wood of the top is concerned, I'm not sure at all. Maybe it's just the resolution of the photo, so let's wait and see.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

If you don't already know, our friend Hans literally wrote the book on Guilds - so I expect if he says your top is hog - then it's hog.

I'm happy to say that I was born well after '65, not to slight any of the vintage folks around here. '88 actually.
