Collectors notwithstanding, I always thought it'd be fascinating to know how many old band instruments (and of what types) are sitting in people's closets, never to be played again. I'll bet those would be some pretty shocking numbers. You think that would be outdistanced by orphaned guitars?

I've run across charities in at least two different cities that ask for instruments to be donated. They are then refurbished by volunteer labor and given to schools that have significant populations of students who cannot afford to rent instruments.

It amazes me the number of guitars that are churned out and sold each year, surely by now there would be a guitar in every US household. I agree with chazmo there must be a ton of unplayed guitars sitting around. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a F-512 in the dumpster some day!

Harmony H-173 bought in 1960 (retired), Alvarez AC60S 2008, Eastman AC320ce 2009 "Hybrid", Guild D25M 1974 (all mahogany, archback), Martin Grand J35E 2009, Martin D12-20 1970, Martin OM-21 2009, Martin 00-15M Custom (full body gloss, wide neck) 2011, Martin 00-15M Custom (12 fret, wide neck, solid peghead) 2012, Voyage-air VAOM-06 2010

Now that would be a find! Someone claimed to have found an F-612 recently... it's a crazy world out there with a lot of guitars sitting in people's closets.
