And....

Oh no! Today, my "account has been marked inactive." !!! What will I do? I'm feeling a bit schizo on the whole thing. To bucket or not to bucket, that is the question.... Oh, how I look forward to the next email spam from photobucket.

I rescued all my Photobucket images some time ago and relocated the important ones to Imgur. I kept my Photobucket account to keep track of their descent into rampant monetization.

I can tell you what will happen once you "verify and secure" your account: If you are hosting photos in Photobucket that appear elsewhere (like LTG) your account will be locked with a "hosting is not allowed" message and Photobucket will attempt to get you to pay for a plan that permits hosting. If you do not your account remains locked.

I felt GOOD about deleting my account. Still had my nice Corona X-160 pics on it from Cream City Music/can't remember their other name where I got it. And my 67 CS Tele. And my Mosrite Celebrity. And my first Takamine. And the Hondo I bought in high school. And the Magnatone 460. All gone. Sigh.

Least I got all the pics.

I have never used any of those hosting sites mentioned in this topic, and never will.
Why anyone would trust strangers to act in a decent and reasonable fashion when there is potential for them to hold you to ransom for stuff you value and yet have given them contol of, is beyond me.

Because most people don’t have the means nor the inclination to host images themselves.

I suspect most of the other hosting sites will eventually go out of business or find some other ways to monetize their content.

Personally, every picture that I have ever hosted since I became active with online forums (around 2002, and mostly on photobucket) came from my backed-up home computer drives so I'll never lose them. The problem is that all the threads of the past where I linked to those pictures will lose visibility to them.

Thankfully, when GAD re-tooled, re-hosted, and beefed up LTG, he was able to allow us to keep pictures on the site. That way, we can be sure that as long as LTG stays alive, our (current) threads with uploaded pictures will stay consistent. Sadly, much of our pre-GAD pictorial history here got lost when photobucket broke the internet. These days, most of that stuff was restored by photobucket, but will gradually go away as they remove content from non payers (like me).

What you may not know is that every time I stumble across and old thread with photobucket links I fix them with black magic tech geekery and put the non-watermarked image here on LTG. That way at least one more post/thread will survive when Photobucket eventually goes away.

I've never kept the sole copy of an image on a hosting service, but that is a generational thing coming from the days when network connections were not ubiquitous. If I needed it I kept it local because I could not count on network access being available.

I hosted some images on (free) Wordpress and others on (formerly free) Google and linked to them here as needed. I am slowly replacing Wordpress images with copies uploaded to LTG. The Google images will probably remain lost because of changes I made with Google as they started limiting storage and offering paid plans.

GAD,
I understand that, but all I'm saying is when one relies on others, one must apply the principle of Caveat Emptor.

No doubt, but things like that come easy to me. In a world where damn-near everything is in "the cloud" and very few understand what that means or why it's a problem, it doesn't surprise me that this happened. For most people tech is one step from magic while also being too damn complicated. Photobucket thrived because back when Forums like this one ruled the Earth, those same forums were incapable of locally storing photos.

Oh no! I'm very scared...

Your account has been marked for deletion.

This might have very big impact if they decide to delete accounts that hold images in historically important threads. Think of the amp thread as an example. If they deleted capnjuan's account before I migrated all the pics they'd be gone forever.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply it wasn't a bad thing, GAD. It's just that they've been threatening for years. :)

You remember the first Photobucket fiasco in 2017 when they shut off 3rd party hosting on their free accounts, and broke almost every message board and a bunch of other things on the internet?

I recall a heartfelt "we're sorry and we'll NEVER do that again" apology.

Indeed. That's what's led to all this. It's why I laugh at their continued warnings and messages about deleting my stuff. I wouldn't trust them with a 10-foot pole.
