Over the last 8 years or so I've been doing quite a bit and invested fairly heavily into things that will make my home less repair intensive and increase its resale value. I've covered the entire walls and ceiling (including my finished basement, the Geetar Bar party room and attached upstairs barn with music room #2 in tongue and groove knotty pine. Not only does it look great, voila!!! No more painting.

I also replaced the decking material on 3 decks with the Trex type material plus the rails with the white, hard plastic material so no more power washing and resealing every couple years. My inside house, upstairs barn and basement flooring has all been replaced with the composite wood look flooring.

I also replaced the roofs on my home/music room #1, two 24'x40' 2 story barns, and my Geetar Bar party room with metal roofs. Nothing better than hearing the rain beat down on those roofs. Plus in the winter you get a great look as the snow/ice melts a bit and it starts hanging over the roof. I love that look. I shot a couple quick pics to show you what I mean.

I have a bit more to go but I'm 80% to where I'd like to be now.

Makes me want to visit Barton City in the Winter. Those pictures take me back to the 50s and my memories still make me smile. Just a great beginning to this day.

Didn't someone post recently about not being used to metal roofs and nearly lost a family member or pet when they walked out at the exact moment the metal roof decided to release its snow?

Oh hell no. I'm basically incompetent in all things in life. I have all my work done by an Amish crew. Totally trustworthy, they do fine work and are price competitive to boot.

well i really like your house and yard from the pictures man. you are in a really sweet spot in the country. looks like there are some woods there and a pond that is kind of frozen over. i really miss winter sometimes.

Yeah, I like it. I live in a 3000+ acre development with all parcels 10 acres or more. I have 30 acres here with boatloads of forest, a pond in my back yard, a couple lakes within a mile of me, all surrounded by thousands of acres of woodland in the Huron National Forest. I grew up in NW Wisconsin in an area very much like this so that is what I was going for when I first bought the property back in 1981.

No gutters?
None needed. I also built extensions with roofs over all of the decks so the water comes down quite a ways from the house. I do have gutters on the back of the house (2 story salt box type), to keep the water away from the back of the house and potential basement water problems. Haven't had a problem yet and hope I never do.

Hee hee! I was going to say that I thought snowbirds were the people from up north who come to Florida for the winter. The ones on that roof are neat little gadgets, and kinda cute, too.

Congratulations on getting your house almost the way you want it. I think I could use an Amish crew down here!! Our go-to carpenter now has his son, recently out of the military, working with him and his rates have doubled to tripled. We can't afford him anymore.

As for the metal roof, I know a lot of people love to hear rain on the roof, however, we replaced our shingle roof with a metal one some years ago and I don't like it at all. I like not being able to hear the rain. Nice and quiet works for me. Water hitting the roof just keeps me awake. I think (or maybe hope) this roof is on its last leg and if that's the case I'm going for shingles next time, maybe even with some solar panels if I can find a roofer who has experience installing them.

However, that is a beautiful photo of the snow hanging from the roof. And I totally applaud the idea of replacing the deck wood with weather resistant composite. I'd like to do that, too. Some day.

With lumber prices having tripled recently, the composite stuff becomes an even more attractive alternative.

What I really love is a tile roof, but way too pricey for me!

Our rain down here is pretty dramatic compared to other areas so metal roofs may be a little too loud for many.
