Checked old posts and have found people on both sides of the fence, but could not find anyone who A/B ed them. I recently played a 00-15 that oozed bluesy hog goodness. Very nice guitar. Never heard a M20 though...thoughts?

My M20 definitely oozes bluesy hog goodness. Buddy of mine has a newer 0015, love it, great blues box also. Never a/b-ed them side by side but I prefer my M20. In all fairness, my M20 has 45 more years of playing time on it than his Martin.
My vote is that you buy them both!!! 8)

Hi Ridge,

Havent compared them, but I've got the all Mahoghany 00 Martin. Nice sound but I find it uncomfortable to play sitting in a normal chair, neck and shoulder get real sore after a while. It's OK when you're slouched in a sofa though. Sound wise it's OK, it's a Martin. Nowhere near a bluesbox like my old F30 though.....

Why don't you pop over and play them both, see what you think ?

Cheers, Ian

Ian,

Speaking of your F30, you list it in your signature as a "70ish" model. Does it have a serial number? You could certainly narrow it down to the year....if you wish to, that is.

Curious,
Joe

My local shop had several 0015's & I had the opportunity to AB one with my F20. Totally different guitars, my F20 is maple & has a 1 5/8" fretboard. The fretboard on the 0015 was more user friendly & it is a little bit bigger,

Practical reality is the 0015 is likely more versatile, however I drove home with my F20 & a smile on my face.

I owned a 00-15 for a while, sold it to one of my students, and kinda wishin' I still had it. Had a great tone, but those are sort of dime-a-dozen, along with the 000-15. I don't hear guitarists singing the praises of these nice puppies as much as I do about the Guild M-20.

I have yet to play one, and if I do, will be tempted to buy it. They go for about triple what a new or used Martin 00-15, or 000-15 will go for. 'Course I am talking about the old Guild M-20s, from the old Westerly factory.
The new ones, from China, they are okay . . . but don't have the vintage vibe and the dusty old sound that their '50s and '60s counterparts do.

I haven't a/bed them, but have played both the 00-15 and the new GAD M20. I like both, but, sorry to say here, I think the 00-15 has a great deal more richness and complexity than the GAD M20 (and I really, really like many of the GADs--I own a GAD 30). The Martin's just got much more going on, on the bottom end in particular.

As for a "real," vintage M20--that's a different story, perhaps.

Best of luck in your search, Rick

When I listen to Nick Drake play his M20........I LOVE that sound! ( Not just HIM and his Music....but THAT PARTICULAR GUITAR) and the way it is recorded ( especialy his last 2 albums) you REALLY get a sence of what that instrument can...and DOES do. Yea..........the older ( Westerly) M20s are pretty well renoun...and from all I hear, for very good reason. SG
PS.....from what ive READ, the Martins have the sound more in line with the old Westerly M20's. i think the new ones are a different matter altogether.

Yeah, I am not too keen on the new GAD M20s.
I played one at a local dealer and it didn't 'speak' to me with that Guild vibe, with either the look or the sound. I don't really care where it was made, it just didn't do it.
As you alluded, that 'striped mahogany' wasn't exactly a turn-on.
I guess I just don't have GAD GAS!

2K is WAY too much for an m20 imho. See them going for anywhere from 700 to 1000 on average. Some exceptions higher and lower.

All I can say is that I LOVE my M-20 and after all it was a LTG group project acquisition...but it's not Westerly, it's Hoboken.

Tom Jutz (Nanci Griffith's Blue Moon Orchestra)

and Janis Ian loved it too

now if I could just play it as well as they do...guess I'll have to practice some more. It really is an amazing guitar, I can't thank you guys enough for helping me get it. jm

I'll never tire of seeing your M20. I'll be very happy to find one of my own, so thanks for reminding me.

Joe

Joe any ole time you want to come on down and give her a play just let me know (it seems to me someone mentioned before that since this was a group LTG project we should have shared custody).
