Hey Gang,

New Guild owner here, recently a friend of the family gave my son a Guild D50 (Its going to be an xmas present). Our friend said that it had been his fathers guitar and that he remembers his dad having it as far back as around 1972 ish..... Here is where the curiosity begins... based on info I have dug up online the serial number would indicate that the date of manufacture is much newer than that.. here is the serial number: Guild D50 NT Serial D500558 The general appearence of the guitar would certainly appear older. In any event I was told that you guys know it all when it comes to Guild. Currently I have the Guitar at the shop for a set up and some minor repairs before xmas morning! What can I say, He's a lucky kid...

Thanks in advance for any info you may have

Chris

Hello Chris,

The D-50 in question was manufactured during 1990. It will probably have a 1989 ink stamped date on one of the beveled edges of the neckblock, which should be visible through the soundhole.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Welcome here acusticchris. I'm LOVIN' my old D50, which recently was returned to me after eight months in Fender's Nashville shop. It's never leaving my sight again!

Must have seemed like 17 years eh Sandy...so good people, play and baby your babies, light strings have kept mine away from neck resets for 30+ years. And...time goes by slowly when you don't have your baby hangin' around or on your lap...Sandy knows....!  Steffan

Welcome to LTG, from another D-50 owner. Let your son play it too! Enjoy,

Nah, I've got two daughters (10 and 12), and the Guild room is off-limits w/o my permission/presence. But we did recently "bring home" a little Gibson LG-O that they will be allowed to experiment with... if they desire. I'll give it a "formal" intro sometime over the holidays, when I have a chance to take and post pics.

Thanks for all the responses. I have always wanted a Guild but pricing and changes in manufacture have kept me away... I even thought the Guild name was no longer manufactured...? Anyway, I was hoping it was an older guitar but I'm still thrilled with it and I'm sure my son will be too. It's hard to believe that someone could put that much wear n tear on quality instrument in 20 yrs...? I've got an old FG that I picked up used in an Alabama pawn shop 20+ yrs ago that looks like it was made last week... (unless you look close  ). The gold is even worn off the Grovers on the D50 so its not all just abuse. In any event its a great instrument and I am sure my son is going to be beside himself. Hell, I'll admit it Im more than a little jealous! I started teaching Matt (lucky recipient) when he was 8 or 9; he is 12 now and teaches me new music on a regular basis so this will be the perfect step up for his talent. Not just a new guitar but a Guild with some history and soul in it. "Matt Frost" remember that name boys.... you'll hear it again someday :)

Thanks,
Acustic-chris

Chris,

Welcome to LTG, and congrats on the receipt of a great guitar for your son. The wear of the gold plate on the tuners is very common.

Given that the guitar has likely been sitting around a bit in recent years, you might want to have the guitar checked out and set up by a luthier.

Best wishes!
