due to her having her "own"timing. The second, nowhere near as impressive sounding, but music educated, was steady on the beat. Give me timing over flash any day.
I agree. That "own timing", or "own style" type of thing is synonamous with: then pay yourself with your own money. Because it will be difficult tfro anyone to be pay anything at all for that quality of playing.

I bear in mind one thing, that certain groups in the past have specialized in a free form structure of music and timing, such as the early material from the group Genesis. Another example is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. But you can definately bet that those musicians are all capable of playing those timings right on, and in total unison with each other.

....Am I missing something here?

Who am we to say, Joe? Try playing with a metronome and find out!

It's not always about "fast", either. Try playing a slow melody in perfect time.

It's the slow beats that give me fits!

   As you well know Mr. Scratch, it's the fast ones I have a tough time with! :D

I'm just going to play my Guild and let you guys figure out all this stuff.
You might be trying too hard, so loosen up a little and enjoy the ride. :?

I got rhythm
I got music
I got my gal
Who could ask for anything more?
:D

Singing in a choir I learned: Before you can start swinging or being flexible with the tempo you have to know how to do it exactly!
I think it's the same with playing guitar; and it's very good to practise with any kind of metronome from time to time.
(even if you think you always keep the beat …  )

Being able to keep a beat is A Very Good Thing. If, however, you do not play music with others and have a forgiving audience when you do play, then it is a skill that can remain undeveloped.

On some songs it is barely noticeable and I've had friends say they never notice the change in tempo. It is noticeable; however, when I record. The waves don't lie... Dapmdave and I are playing with a collaboration project and he's got a real handle on the drum/bass line thing. Lots of fun, and it is very enjoy able learning new techniques...

Got the drum machine yesterday and played with it a bit last night. Lots to learn yet but it is nice to be able to program different patterns to play along with. Certainly keeps me honest on the tempo as I usually find myself speeding up a bit during guitar interludes etc...
