I remember that run of quilted Mahogany Peregrine's - less than a dozen made if I remember correctly...

Thought the seller's timeline description is misleading

For some reason a lot of people mix up the sale of Guild to Fender in 1995 and the close of the Westerly, RI plant and the subsequent move of production to Corona, CA during 2001.

The seller was right though about the year the instrument was manufactured, which was 2001 and it was made in the Guild Custom Shop in Nashville, TN. Actually, it was finished in October 2001, after the Westerly plant was already closed.

Hans, any idea how many of these were made?

Hello jazzmang,

It depends on what you mean with how many. They did quite a few of the Peregrine Customs but only a few of those had 'quilted' tops. I visited the Custom Shop in Nashville around the time they were finishing your guitar and at that time I believe there were a few more of those they were working on but there was also a small run of M-95s with 'quilted' tops, so I don't remember exactly how many of each.
I know they did several small runs of 'quilted' top Peregrine Customs spread out over a 4-year period and they were all a bit different. I could try to do a hand count in the ledgers but that would be quite a bit of work. If I can find the time I might do that some day.

Sincerely,

Haha no need to hand count the ledgers! Now that I think about it, I am actually curious to find out about how many guitars the custom shop could build per month, as a ballpark figure.

Hello jazzmang,

A whole lot less than what you probably would think. There were only a few people out there and they were also doing repairs, some R&D and the Benedetto guitars of course, so that kept them pretty busy.

Hans,

One final question for you on this thread: After Fender closed down Westerly, IIRC the Custom Shop in Nashville stayed open a bit longer. Is the old Custom Shop now the repair shop for Guild? If so, when did this transition occur.

I'd appreciate any info you've got. Of course if you want to keep some suspense for Part II, I completely understand.

Thanks!
