Not a Guild guy, or even a guitarist, but he often had great guitarists in his bands.

I heard about this last night, and it's terribly sad news. Now that he and Lonnie Smith are both gone, the two greatest pillars of the Hammond B3 have left us. I saw them both many times at the old Jazz Standard in NYC, which unfortunately didn't survive the pandemic. I liked that place so much better than the better known clubs in the city.

Sorry to hear this. I've always loved organ combos - Joey, Lonnie, Shirley Scott, Jimmy Smith. I have a B-3 playlist that ends up as a soundtrack to cookouts.

Wonder why so many B-3 players come out of Philly?

Philly's produced a ton of jazz players over the years, not just on B3,

Tyner, Coltrane, Getz, Philly Joe Jones, Sun Ra, Lee Morgan, Grover Washington, Jr., Christian McBride, Melody Gardot ...

What strikes me are the number of B-3 players:

DeFrancesco (Joey and Papa John), Shirley Scott, Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Trudy Pitts, Richard Groove Holmes ...

I always loved the Hammond sound being so front and center on Deep Purple. John Lord I believe.
