Well, folks, they called me this morning and officially rescinded the job offer. I'm back to "looking for work." God must have something better in mind for me.

Sorry to hear. Is there anything you can do on your own to hold you over? I've pretty much always had a steady job except for a three month stretch. Had jobs I liked, jobs I hated, and owned my own business. Also owned a few martial arts studios just for fun and spending money. My wife on the other hand has never had a full time job but has 5 different endeavors that each bring in a little bit. Together we've done OK.
Any way, Hang in there and best of luck.

Yeah, it hurts. This job offer was paying $30/hr. Fortunately, I'm not one to count my chickens before they hatch, but we were sure planning on paying off a couple of bills.

Well, I'm with Coastie on this one, I think it's a sh#tty thing to do! Did they give any reason why they would rescind a job offer after it had been extended??

I'm really sorry to hear this, dread. It's bad business, as far as I'm concerned. :?

I feel very sorry Dread, and certainly understand your desire to sue that slime, after this kind of deceit.
I know the feeling as it happened to my wife few years back: She got hired at a teacher job fair, and the following week (with only a couple of weeks before the start of the school year) received an e-mail "we're sorry but we decided to go another route with the position offered to you".
Just as they would have held you accountable for performing your job (had you had a chance to start it), they should be held accountable for offering a job and not fulfilling their part of the deal.
It's bad enough when you're told after 14 years in excellent standing with a company that your job is moving away (my situation now), but being told after an interview "you have a job" and the following week "Now you don't" should be punishable by law. There should be accountability in the hiring process, but it might not come until someone kills himself or herself as a result of such irresponsible action, and the relatives sue the hell out of the company responsible for the deceit.
That they can bully you and your livelihood around as you move chips on a board game is nothing but contemptible.
Best of luck to you in your "back-on-the-job-market" situation....

I spoke with my attorney friend this morning; unfortunately I have no legal recourse as this was an "at will" employment contract.

So I just sent email to the employment agency and the employer requesting that they compensate me to the tune of two weeks wages at the agreed upon rate. I don't believe this is an unreasonable request seeing as I turned down another job offer to accept theirs, andthe fact that they reneged on a contractual agreement. It can't hurt to ask.
