AKA a hell-of-a guitar player. Check out some of his videos!

Welcome Vadim.

Craig

I already did! He's phenomenal. Needless to say so is his S-100 and Bluesbird.

I'm about to derail this thread...

Vadim, I have to ask, since it's far more popular in Russia than the states, are you a hockey fan?

Not as avid as you might think. But I try to watch World Championships and Olympics. We get NHL here but it's on at really wacky hours (around 3 a.m.) that I don't get a chance to watch it.

Hans, do you know what these two switches do on a S-70 (it's Grot's guitar, hope he won't mind me cutting his S-70 in a photo)?

On of them has got to be a phase switch. But what is the other's purpose?

Since the owner of the S-70 I'm contemplating of buying change the layout of the controls hence the new pickguard I don't see those two switches on the model I'm looking at.

I watch a lot of NHL, so I had to ask. I grew up in Texas watching the Dallas Stars. I'll never forget watching them win the Stanley Cup in '99. That last game had enough overtimes that it ended in the early morning stateside, lol! My favorite player from those days was Sergei Zubov, so I figured I'd give a shout-out to hockey in Russia.

Hey, thanks! There are a lot of players from Eastern Europe in NHL. We got a lot of great offending players but I think good Russian goalies are really lacking in NHL. Khabibulin makes no difference when he's guarding the net. Since Tretyak I think there hasn't been a lot of good goaltenders.

I see you have an S-100. I mean did. How dare you, sir sell it? Just kidding. What's the story there?

You know, you're right. There are a few though: Evgeni Nabokov and Ilya Bryzgalov have both been at or near the top of the league (stats-wise) for several seasons. On the other hand, both have done poorly in the playoffs several times. Bryzgalov had been w/ Phoenix, though, which is a team coached by Dallas' old coach, Dave Tippet. They play a very stingy, dump and chase defensive style that tends to win enough games to make the playoffs but is very difficult to succeed with in the playoffs, when the other teams step it up a notch. He might see some glory yet, with his new team...

As for younger guys, 26y.o. Jaroslav Halak (Czech) and 23y.o. Semyon Varlamov both have some promise.

Those 4 plus the old 'Bulin Wall are about it though...

The short story is I needed money more than guitars at the time. I actually put up 6-7 guitars for sale and ended up selling 4 of them. I kind of hoped the Guild would end up being the one that didn't sell, though... It sold on line to a guy in Massachusetts. I hoped he'd join here, but I don't think he ever did.

Here's what it looked like:
PICT1481.jpg

It had been played a lot and had a lot of finish wear, dents and dings, but everything was structurally fine and it played and sounded great. My logic at the time was that, if I ever missed having an S-100 a lot and had the money, they're not too difficult to find. Some of the instruments I kept were much closer to one of a kind.

Still, I do miss it sometimes. Funny thing, the guy that bought it from me e-mailed me right after it arrived asking me why I ever sold it! I think he was pleased with it.

Sorry nobody's answered your question about the mini toggles. I'm sure Hans and Grot know the answer. It wouldn't surprise me to learn those DiMarzios are stacked humbuckers and, if so, that the 2nd switch is a coil tap.

Condolences, man. I hope that day never comes when I'd have to sell my guitars.

There's no hurry with S-70. Those pickups as far as I know are single-coils. Coil-tap splits the double coil humbucker and make it sound more like a single-coil, right?

Thank you for clearing that out for me, Hans. So I guess these two switches really make a difference when it comes to versatility of sounds in the S-70.

Partial thread veer for good reason:

Condolences go out to the families of the victims of the tragic crash of the Russian plane carrying the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey club. Former Minnesota Wild forward Pavol Demitra was one of the casualties, although with a few other ex-NHLers. What a shame!

Don't know what you got to say in moments like these. Condolences. The least we can do is remember them.

That's the truth. Yesterday was a very sad day indeed. As a matter of fact, this whole summer has been ugly for hockey. We'd already seen 4 NHL players (2 retired, 2 current) die of various circumstances this summer.

As for yesterday's crash, it's unspeakably sad and is something that will reverberate across the globe, as players and coaches have so many different ties. I for one am especially sad to see Karlis Skrastins go; I enjoyed watching him play for Dallas the last two seasons and I know he leaves behind a wife a child and I believe had another kid on the way...

I can't remember an offseason like this ever before in any sport.

I recently made some very positive improvements to my S-70. First, I replaced the neck position single coil pickup with a DiMarzio humbucker blade pickup.

Next, I rewired the two toggle switches to rid the guitar of that annoying phase effect. I hated it and never used it.

Now, the upper toggle enables the pickups to operate in either series or parallel. The lower toggle turns the humbucker on and off.

The combination of all three selector switches allows me numerous pickup combinations that creates a nearly unlimited number of tone options.

This setup is MUCH better than the stock wiring and is even better than my old S-100.
