The fellow who just sold me the '93 D4 included a note inside the case. This was the best part of the note:

"I hope you enjoy this guitar, it sounds great. I really believe Guilds are a poor man's Martin, but I never knew why Martins are so much more expensive."

Just wanted to share this little tidbit,
Joe

I don't know about that. I just recently landed a 1968 D40. I recently played a fine example 1955 D18. I think the Guild sounds better. Don't get me wrong I have two Martins but in this instance D40 trumps the D18. Here's the good part-- 55 D18 5,000 bucks, 68 D40 799 bucks
So if you're poor you might as well sound good doing it.

Naw, 'fraid not

First 200 Martin listings on quick eBay search go down to $2850, 200 Guilds go down to $1540. And there are many Martins over $10,000, no Guilds at all.
If you narrow your search to new guitars with warranty, you will notice they are eerily similar. The vintage/used guitar market is not a good representation of current day new guitar prices.
Whoops, thanks. I'm sure you;re right. I haven't looked at new guitar prices for decades.

I agree, MSRP prices on new Guilds, Martins, Taylors and Gibsons are all in the same general area, ignoring special models. The tricky bit is the street prices for new guitars, as an example Martins can be had for around 60% of MSRP from some reliable internet dealers, Gibson and Guild don't even come close (don't know about Taylor values not a fan). When it comes to used, Guild wins hands down because they are seriously unknown/underrated. What it amounts to is that in buying a new Guild you are instantly losing a big chunk of the monetary value. Of course if you are buying for the tone and as a keeper that is another story.

Harmony H-173 bought in 1960 (retired), Alvarez AC60S 2008, Eastman AC320ce 2009 "Hybrid", Guild D25M 1974, Martin Grand J35E 2009, Martin D12-20 1970, Martin OM-21 2009, Martin 00-15M Custom (full body gloss, wide neck) 2011, Voyage-air VAOM-06 2010
"I'm glad there are a lot of guitar players pursuing technique as diligently as they possibly can, because it leaves this whole other area open to people like me."

I think it was Bing who nailed the situation with a statement to the effect of, "Guild's biggest competition is used Guilds."

Why Guilds depreciate like a new car is a mystery to me. It's great for buyers though...

Yes a mystery that is quite unfortunate. I have heard some new F50s and F47s online that I would consider saving for. But, I buy and sell and am hesitant to buy new Guilds due to potential $ loss.

Yeah...for one thing, if you're unemployed, your Guild says: "COOL!!! More time for us!!"

Way back when I bought my D-55, I played martin Special Edtion Eric Clapton, I bought the Guild, the price was equal so money was not the important factor. The martin just lacked the sound and the playability of the D-55 and the body just too small.
