I think my most fave amp is the smallest, Champ type with 8" speaker, surprising.
I have original silverface Vibro Champ - I love the sound - just missing reverb. But I have found a 3-spring short tank w pouch that fits in there . . . maybe I should add an op-amp circuit for it - x-tra tube might need new transformer.
Fortunately there will be a NAD-thread coming as soon delivery is done . . . . .
As of modern amps - I have tried many in my search for a small amp w reverb - and while most of them had myriad of possibilities - so far I have not come across w anything new that works like my old Fender - just plug & Play - no fussing w knobs between every song.
And I can not tell you what is wrong w those amps - somehow they hust do not sound quite right - they fill you w urge to fiddle w knobs trying to get that sound. Whereas w Fender I can turn tone and tremolo and they do affect the sound - but it is still always good.
Last one I tried few weeks ago was Katana - I read all over how people like it - I could not get anything out of it that I liked. It was like a bad mixing console from 70:s - all frequencies were present - no hiss - no hum - no audible distortion - but - no decent sound either.
All this may not be a big issue for those playing w overdrive - but I play only clean.
