Unless it’s about “that sound” that someone is looking for, I would think that todays amps blow away anything from the 1900’s, and for way cheaper.
I guess it’s akin to the vintage cars market.
Probably true for a lot of bass gear, though the aforementioned SVT and Portaflex are still very highly regarded. There are just few stages that need an SVT anymore. Some people go with 'baby SVTs' like the V4B. Portaflexes are highly sought after for studios.

Absolutely not true for guitar gear, although people who go for a more processed sound skew towards modern equipment.

Having played numerous valve amps & guitars in the 60s, I can assure you that, for me, most modern stuff is far superior In sound & build quality.

Not sure what you mean by ‘processed sound’. I just plug straight into valve amps, never use any pedals.

I think my most fave amp is the smallest, Champ type with 8" speaker, surprising.

I have original silverface Vibro Champ - I love the sound - just missing reverb. But I have found a 3-spring short tank w pouch that fits in there . . . maybe I should add an op-amp circuit for it - x-tra tube might need new transformer.

Fortunately there will be a NAD-thread coming as soon delivery is done . . . . .

As of modern amps - I have tried many in my search for a small amp w reverb - and while most of them had myriad of possibilities - so far I have not come across w anything new that works like my old Fender - just plug & Play - no fussing w knobs between every song.

And I can not tell you what is wrong w those amps - somehow they hust do not sound quite right - they fill you w urge to fiddle w knobs trying to get that sound. Whereas w Fender I can turn tone and tremolo and they do affect the sound - but it is still always good.

Last one I tried few weeks ago was Katana - I read all over how people like it - I could not get anything out of it that I liked. It was like a bad mixing console from 70:s - all frequencies were present - no hiss - no hum - no audible distortion - but - no decent sound either.

All this may not be a big issue for those playing w overdrive - but I play only clean.

I'm going to guess using a modeling amp to get a sound rather than the physical amp and speakers that can also produce the sound.
But moreso, using the processing power of a digital signal chain to shift between sorts of layered effects and sounds. I know a guy with a totally digital setup that he did programming for so he could seamlessly shift between, say an organ part to an envelope phaser to a slow flange, and blend between them while keeping the ambient delays and reverb settings static. He sounds amazing on it. I wouldn't be able to get anything out of it.

I remember seeing yours Sandy, and your description is right on...at one point several years ago, Carl had THREE on consignment in
Union Music, all in nice shape and none of them moved...I could not understand it, its the bluesmans' amp...but my back did ;)
