So, Tom, what do you say? I'm just curious. Do you just say nothing?

For folks of my heritage, the day of atonement (Yom Kippur) is a similar example. It's absolutely, intentionally not supposed to be a happy occasion; the whole 24 hours is supposed to be somber reflection. Still, I'm pretty sure that when I'm greeting someone who observes it, I would say "happy."

Anyway, much ado about nothing, really. Ralf, you did absolutely nothing wrong by saying that, and I'm sure Tom wasn't offended. Right, Tom?

Also, as long as we're muddying the waters a bit, I never say "HAPPY Memorial Day". It's a more solemn type holiday of remembrance of those who passed while defending our country in the military. Of course any celebration can be joyous with friends and family, but the overall feeling to me, is to honor those who died while in military service. So if you honor them with hot dogs, watermelon, beer or by prayer and testimonials or ALL of those things, it's about honoring the dead who didn't make it back from battle.
Tom, I'll bet you just love the idea of "Memorial Day Sales" ;):ROFLMAO:

You need to get out more.
You're assuming a lot!
Start with people who do not distinguish between the purpose or honorees of Memorial Day and Veteran's Day.
There are ignorant people everywhere. You should try talking to my Navy veteran friend Josh, who thought (at least until we discussed it) that the Civil War and Revolutionary War were the same war.

He's still kind of hazy.
Find a few who are so opposed to the United States military and involvement in foreign wars that they cannot acknowledge any good resulting from military service. Then add in a couple who are so opposed to "government" that they resent any government sanctioned holiday.
Like most of us, I know lots of people on the left and the right and with no political interests whatsoever. I don't know anyone who thinks our military fought for the three-day weekend, which is what the captioned photo seemed to be trying to correct. So I didn't understand it. (There were trade unionists who fought and died for the two-day weekend. But that obviously doesn't apply.)

Anyhow, it's been explained.

Whoops. Pass me a napkin. There is egg on my face.

I have seen that meme in many other places and you are the first person I have encountered who thought it was saying that a goal or side effect of military service was the three day weekend. Everywhere else it was seen as an observation that some people do not acknowledge or honor the sacrifices individuals in the military made on behalf of the general population. Those people don't care and this the only reason for Memorial Day is a three day weekend.

I come from a family that has a long history of military service, myself included, but who are not particularly emotional. Memorial Day has been, and always will be, the first weekend out on the lake, home made ice cream and hot dogs. I guess in thinking about it we were celebrating what those who paid the ultimate price died for. Over the years I've come to realize that a lot of people are very moved by the symbolism that Memorial day represents, but that has never been us. So carry on, make it what you will, it is all good. If you find solace in remembering, the parades, the ceremonies, I hope you had a good one. I'm in it for the ice cream.
