I'm no Killdeer

I am certainly not the photo expert that our own Killdeer is however I spied this little guy today and had to shoot him. It is a Burrowing Owl, usually I see two of them but this fella was solo today, standing about 7 inches tall on top of it's burrow. No I did not throw the beer bottle there for scale!!

Great shot of one of my favorites, and a unique owl at that! If I lived near one of those burrows, I'd be there until the young ones came out. Lucky dog, you!!

I have to cross the mountains to eastern Washington to see those guys.

Not many are on Joe's level. His photographs could be used in nature magazines but yours is a very nice example of catching nature. The beer bottle is a shame but does work well to gauge scale.

One of my favorite writers, Carl Hiaasen, wrote a book for young adults called Hoot. It tells the story of young kids trying to save Burrowing Owls from a big development of some sort in Florida.

Familiar scenario, told as only Carl Hiaasen can tell it, with his usual
array of oddball characters. :wink:
