I'm just starting the hunt for a USA DV4. There's one hanging on my local guitar store's wall for a so-so price, but I wanted to see if my LTG brethren could "hook me up". Are there any Guild dealers in the forum?

Hi Sefton
The music store I teach out of in Wasilla, Alaska has a DV4. Also a DV6 both Tacoma made.
Have had both for while. Guild isn't real big up here. Everybody wants a Martin, Gibson,
or a pile of crap.
They are both now made in Mexico, so maybe the last Tacoma ones on the planet.
I've played both while waiting for somebody to show up for a lesson which means I have a fair amount of play time on each one. They both sound real good depending on your preference for mahogany or rosewood. Personally, I like the rosewood DV6.
Anyways, call 907-376-4006 10:00AM- 6:00PM Alaska time and talk to Henry, Hank or Ana and see what kind of deal they can make you. They are both marked down. If you are in the lower 48, you can figure about $80-$100 shipping USPS Priority.
Good Luck

Sefton, I'll also wager that Bing K (Guitars of Montana) can hook you up. Good luck.

By the way, I wrote a brief review of my impressions of the (new) Ensenada-built DVs a few months ago. The workmanship is so-so, but the DV-4 is a really good player (and is a bargain). The DV-6 was not so good. Both are extremely "raw" guitars, at least in their current form.

The USA-made DVs ended last year in Tacoma, WA as they didn't make the transition to New Hartford (instead Guild set up production of those two models in Mexico, as mentioned).

Thank you for the connection! Is it too much to ask for your name so I can mention to them that you referred me? It seems like they know you pretty well, and I want to call with my best foot forward. Thanks

Plus: Since its a really raw guitar, and prone to expanding and shrinking with changes in weather, would it be smart to ship one from freezing Alaska to 99 degree Los Angeles?

Hi Sefton
Sure! Just tell them Frank the weird guy that makes rediculouly large guitars said to call.
Some folks know me by my middle name Raymond that I sometimes use on the net for reasons I'm not quite sure about yet, but they wouldn't know that one.
I've been teaching there for 10 years so they are like family.
Its a family run business. Henry is the store manager and is Hank and Ana's son.

Its funny that you should think we are freezing here in South Central Alaska. :D
We had record setting temperatures in the 80s in July which just about killed most of us off.
Its 62deg. now and the suns out and warming up fast.
If you are in LA, I would be more concerned with humidity which is a guitar perfect 50% up here at the moment.

In consideration of shipping, I generally have had good luck(knock on wood)with USPS Priority.
Just read Jazz's thread about his trajic DV72 shipping story. SORRY JAZZ!!! :(
The problem with USPS is their 108" total rule for air freight which is just slightly over what a guitar box is sized for with minimal space left over for extra padding at top and bottom.
I have had guitars come and go to Jay Pilzer in Tennessee with no problems so far(looking for wood to knock)
It is the cheapest air shipping from here though. There is a big break on insurance if you ship it Express which makes it only about $10.00 more over standard priority plus insurance.
I think its worth the extra bucks as it is fully trackable plus they give you a set day for delivery.
Anyways, Good Luck!
Frank

A friend of mine recently bought a Tacoma DV4 at Buffalo Brothers in Carlsbad, California. I don't know anyone there but I might be able to find out if she has the name of the sales guy. But while that is waiting to boil, a call might tell ya if they even still have one.

Good Luck! Hope you find one!

Hi TMG
Didn't mean to sound as if Taylors were not worthy guitars.
Fact is I have never got to play one yet. Seen some come through the store for various reasons and they do look nice.
Might just have to leave it that way considering what happened after picking up a Guild D35. :)
Strange that I have seen a raft of Martins and Taylors and other brands come in for various things, but hardly ever any Guilds.
Not sure if thats because there isn't that many up here in the far north to begin with or hardly anything ever goes wrong with them.

Took some pictures of the DV4 and DV6 yesterday and did a sound test.

The DV4

The DV6
Note the top of the DV6 has a real tight grain

As expected, the DV4 has a brighter sound than the DV6 which is warmer with a more pronounced bass. Both have nice volume and sound real good. And they are not even broke in yet.
Had a younger empoyee give a listen with better hearing than I got and we came to the same conclusions.
I was real impressed with the top wood on the DV6. The grain is about as tight as it gets.

The store has $829.99 on the DV4 and 899.99 on the DV6.
Basically around $400 or more off their respective list prices.

RT 66,

Curious why you are looking for a Tacoma DV4 versus say a Westerly D6? The D6 is a hog with a great balanced tone, and youshould be able to pick one up even cheaper than the Tacomas'. I can understand if your looking for rosewood vs. the hogs, then D6 is not for you.

Don't wanna vear ya - just wonderin'.

Hey Tunes
Actually I'm not. I just posted some info for Sefton. Good point though. Why not a Westerly?

If you consider the Westerly era, try like mad to find a DV6 to check out. It's the most underrated spruce top/mahogany back/sides dread I've ever come across. Simply outstanding guitars that can be had for $500- $600.

+1 on the Westerly D6 or DV6 (not sure what the diff is) - but I have a D6 NT and can vouch for the sound. It is outstanding IMHO, and the price range noted by mr. fungus is about right on.

Thank you for all the help, and the pictures are great!

I am open to a Westerly D6. I couldn't find any links on the internet to one. And there are no YouTube videos either.

The reason I am looking to buy is because my beloved D55 from Tacoma is delaminating! Bubbles are surfacing around the fret edges where the varnish starts and some of these bubbles have popped! I will be sending the guitar in to Fender to take advantage of the lifetime warranty.

They say it will take 90 days to send the guitar to Nashville and back! Thats a long while without a Guild!

Maybe someone could send me a link to a D6? Maybe someone wants to sell a D6?
