Check this cute little guy out. We have seen many of these (Amanita muscaria) last fall, seemed to be a good year for them. Poisonous though, but nice to look at.

I saw this on the edge of the Patapsco river and stand on it sometimes. You can feel it give a little, like it is pneumatic. It feels like some sort of flexible, chambered tissue. Is it a fungus? It is about 15x15x12

Probably a fungus, yes. I've seen something like that in still water, in a tiny little cove next to a New England lake.
