With the discussion about the elusive DV-72, I was just wondering what is your opinion about what model is the Holy grail of guild guitars?

That's a good question, Richard and you'll likely get lots of differing replies.

If asked which Guild I'd most like to have, it would be the DV-72.

Not sure about others here personally, but my Holy Grail would be an early Starfire II bass in Sunburst or green with the bisonic pickups. 8)

I would have a hard time choosing between a DJF-100 and a DV-73.
A good friend of mine had the same problem, so he bought both.

Exactly sir, that's why Baskin Robbins has 31fllavors......and of course any answer is correct. :D

Been here before. Depends on whether you define Holy Grail in terms of rarity, quality or personal preferences.

Personally, the Guild I would consider selling all of my Guilds for in order to obtain (so maybe "pearl of great price" is a better term than Holy Grail?) would also be a very good to excellent condition Starfire II bass, maple body, green finish, with original Bisonic pickups, and serial number less than BA-1472 because I don't want the tone switch. I think the last time I even saw a green Starfire bass for sale was three years ago. If such a bass even exists anymore I'd expect the bidding to start at $5,000.

My lust for a hollow body M-85 bass is well documented but I pulled a couple of triggers and missed so I figure it is something I would collect but not quite the rarefied atmosphere of Holy Grail for me.

If Guild wanted me to buy a brand new instrument of quasi-Grail status, they should reissue the Starfire II bass with Dark Stars or a good Bisonic clone, get the fit and finish right and give me some blues to choose from for a finish color.

All that said, the differences between the above and my Starfire I are mostly cosmetic which is one reason I am not actually Grail hunting.

Same here Frono. I can live with my StarFire I just fine until one comes along. Of course finding a pair of Dark Stars for the DeArmond would be nice in the meantime!

I am not the biggest fan of sparkly things on guitars so that would rule out anything higher than the DV-52. I like the guitars I have and there are some very nice guitars out there. But I don't think I really have a "holy grail" guitar. If there is another Guild I would want, it would probably be a nice old F50R.

I'll put in my perennial vote for an F-612, but we seem to be talking about 6-strings here.
Six, twelve, bass, solid body, hollow body....as I said, in my estimation all answers are correct. :D

I posted this very question before, as others have before and after me as well.

My holy grail was a 1970s sunburst S-100 Deluxe. And thanks to Matsickma, for planting the DeLuxe seed, and Treem, the Enabler Supreme, for posting about one, I now possess my holy grail guild. Ironically, I happening to be wearing these shoes today.

On the 6-string front, I think the F-50R is a grail, pretty much any era. That said, since it's common, it's hardly unobtanium like and F-612, but it gets my nod as my favorite 6. I've owned a couple of rare examples of the breed, and we could get picky about which F-50Rs are grails, but I don't think that's worthwhile.

As TMG mentioned earlier, the JF-100 is a rather special version of the same formula as the F-50R. I'd lump it in.

Nah. No one really gets beaten up around here for not searching before posting. Depending upon the moderator and mood, repeats may be merged, ignored, or a post pointing to a prior thread might be posted. But unlike a lot of places on the wild wild web, repeats and veers are pretty well tolerated.

No worries. If you search the old threads, we get lots of repeats. Most of us have been guilty of repeats at one point in time.

And we're known to change our minds between posts!!! Last year my reply would have been a 2006 or 2007 Tacoma plant crafted F-412 but I seem to be playing the sixers more these days.

BTW: My previous post on the DV-72 relates to playing West R. Lee's several years ago. Also played his DV-73, but for some reason that DV-72 stood out.

I think what's interesting is that I wouldn't even have known what my grails were without LTG. For me, learning about the guitars and understanding what others hold dear is one of the great motivators for being here. So, threads like this are awesome. Keep 'em coming.
