...I was in our favorite music store today, whole bunch of new Guilds...NH D-55, NH D50 (damn!), a D40 that I can't recall the origin, a Tacoma F20 (I think), several GAD's...AND
a GAD F212...very, very nice...looks like a jumbo body but is small, neck is nice and wide though I suspect the right hand might be a little cramped between the strings...

But it had YOUR name on the tag so I put it back down

Actually I was there to check out the GAD's, as a friend was quizzing me on them with the thought of making one a travel guitar. He has his eye on a Taylor 114ce, which I was fortunate enough to also play there today.

Hard call. The (Mexican) Taylor is very nice, perfect fit and finish, though I don't personally care for that satin or rubbed or whatever they call the finish. Very bright guitar, can see why he likes it 'cause that's his thing, the GAD30RE was much more balanced and bassy...sounded like a guitar! But at several hundred dollars more than the Taylor, the 114ce might be the winner.

Money no object, I'd tell him to spring for a GAD30PCE like mine...

Cool beans, Bill. I have to get over there soon.

Holidays are coming soon, but I just bought another vintage Ibanez so I don't know if I'll be supporting the economy this year. We'll see. :) :)

I'm glad Union is continuing their presence with Guild. I know they've had a pretty rough time lately, but they've definitely got staying power. I keep pulling for them!

I don't think I've played the GAD F212. I'll have to check that out for sure next time. Last time I was focusing on a GAD JF3012 which I liked.

Fair enough on the TaylorMex vs. GAD comparo... Hope your friend enjoys his choice, regardless.

Best wishes, Bill.

Back at "Mecca" today, not much has changed, afraid things must be slow for Carl. There was a stunning Gibson J45 there, Banner-headstock-decal, looked new...and the beautiful G&L "banana-pudding" color tele was still there.

Several markdowns on MIM and GAD Guilds, couple that didn't make any sense to me, one was a black jumbo-sized body, marked as a "JF48." I would have sworn it was a GAD based on the price, so didn't give it a second look, but I can't find that model on the Guild site. Is it an older discontinued piece?

Be great for an Everly Bros or perhaps an Emmylou Harris tribute band!

Boy do I wish we had a music store like that here on Long Island. In my hunt for a 12 string, I went to three Sam Ashs, and three Guitar Centers, and the only Guild in any of them was an old Hoboken Mark IV, which while nice was overpriced, and far what I was looking for. In the old days Guilds were always prominently displayed amongst the Martin and Gibsons. Not any more. :(

Bill, that JF-48 could be a GAD.
Did you notice the pickguard?
It will be the GAD style and not the normal Guild guard.
I had one in Amber Burst and while it was a nice guitar, I never warmed up to the burst.

Hey, Bill. I talked with Carl a month or so ago and, yeah, he did say things were slow. Definite sign of the times.

I take it he never got his New Hartford F-47 delivered (or maybe someone bought it)... I was looking forward to trying that. Yeah, I've been bunkered down with trumpet-related stuff and organizing LMG; haven't been spending much time at the stores or playing for that matter. :)

There's a place in Brooklyn that often has new Guilds on eBay:

Depending on where on the Island you are, it might be worth a trip.

I know of the place, though I've not been there. It's all the way in the far corner of Brooklyn near the Verrazano Bridge. Not exactly local to where I am, unless you consider 40+ miles to be "local". :(

Amazing how different we perceive distance in different parts of the country. My son lives in Iowa, and 40 miles is nothing to him. An old friend from Texas thought nothing about driving 4 hours to an Astros game on the spur of the moment. I'm with you, I recently had a forced transfer that increased my commute from 4 to 27 miles and it's annoying, to say the least.
Actually, if I hadn't just ordered a custom guitar from Vince Pawless in Texas, I would probably be thinking about a trip to Street sounds and Mandolin Brothers to check out the new Guilds at SS and the vintage anything at MB.

Well, 40 miles in the NY Metro area is a wee bit different than 40 miles in Iowa.

I don't think it is regional as much as it is traffic related. If you tell me some place is 40 miles away, I'll say "fine" and ask you how long it will take to get there. My commute is about 15 miles but takes anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes depending upon when I try and make the trip and what the traffic situation is. Forty miles sounds reasonable for a quick trip but 4 hours does not.
