Mighty high praise there Brad, thank you. It was 'Walk Right In' when I first heard that big 12 string sound andfell in love with it immediately, then got the Pete Seeger record set on how to play like Leadbelly. 4 records think I still have 2 of them around somewhere. He was only filmed performing once, in 1945, Three songs..... And you can see them on YouTube, that'so amazing, you can see what a powerhouse he was, tremendous performer....i highly recommend people give it a watch.... Thanks for the kind words folks. :D Steffan
A quick way to find that clip the is to type in the search Leadbelly 1945

Thanks Steffan, I did just that and was treated to something special indeed.
Wow. Amazing to see him perform as such. I had only seen snippets of that foootage in other blues docos, but viewing it in it's full uninterupted state was a real treat. Almost surreal footage on the man at times.......making that guitar 'speak' for the old Grey Goose, and just sing along with him the rest of the time. That was some unique and precious footage of a great man from another time.
Thanks for that too!
Another Christmas gift from you! :D
More folks should see this. 8)

The man had immense presence and his songs show a profound understanding of life, and not without humor and tears. 'Pick a bale of cotton' is exactly what he did...a bale being 1000 lbs. Some people actually died in the field tying to do that... His story is amazing have you listened to Hitler? I'm so glad we are able to study his life. We have a lot to learn....Steffan

I do have a couple of those Guild 12 strings. Joe  ... By the way I see that they say a bale of cotton is 500 lbs... That might have changed.. prettty sure Mr Seeger referred to a bale as a thousand lbs back in the plantation days. Steffan

Maybe next time I'm up your way we can have a Leadbellyfest!

Joe
We can somehow manage have own own! Here on LTG....Via email and computer. Each working on a selected song, and recording it......I think that the mighty man would like that.
Seeing that video has me motivated. 'Grey goose' for me! :D
I'm down for Goodnight Irene!

*On a side note, we had a neighbor when I was growing up named....Irene, and my Dad always started singing that song whenever she left.

Great story, he was performing at a club or college somewhere, he was well over 6 ft and could look at least imposing if not fearsome. He looked as in a very confrontational way to a young couple in the front row..especially the young guy, and launched into "keep your hands off her, keep your hands off her.keep your hands off her you hear what I say you know she don't belong to you"...by the end of the song the poor kid was kind of shaking in his boots.   Steffan
