I'm a professional photographer, and I've spent many years on photo forums.
For a moment when I read your title, I wasn't sure where I was anymore ;)

Shot in 1960 during one of several extensive trips through the U.S. that year (according to the MoMA 2010 exhibition of his work).

The best moments in life, for me, are when I'm confronted with the fact that the universe is not what I thought it was. :)

The picture was posted on TheGearPage, and I was reveling in it (I swear I can smell the hay, hear the horses, and feel the sun on my neck), when I was struck by the guitar. Hey - that's a Guild! For a split second, I had the same sort of broken reality moment. There I was on a guitar forum, sucked into a master's photograph, and pulled out of my revelry by the notion that I needed to share a Guild with the world.

I've gotta agree, this is one of the best photos ever! I love everything about it. Horse trailer, 1956 Coupe de Ville, the guy with his boy in the tack box portion of the trailer, guy with a number on back of his shirt, obviously at some type of competition. Everything. And a Guild. :encouragement:

A pure classic. B&W with no colors to distract from the photograph itself.

When I first started trying to market my photos, I was all B&W, and then a business partner encouraged me to do more color.
Haven't seen her in years, but that's another story. :applouse:

If you're photographing in color you show the color of their clothes - if you use black and white, you will show the color of their soul.

Now, for extra credit, somebody tell us what the guy on the right, almost out of frame, is playing.....

The tuners look to be coming out the back of the headstock and not the side so I suspect a non-Guild nylon string acoustic.

Wow. Truely a great photo. Notice how everyone is glued to the guys playing, even the little ones.
One could write a dozen stories around this photo.
Thanks for sharing.

Classic photo. Is he sitting on the guitar case?

I was wondering about that too. At first I thought it was a guitar case, but the handle is in the wrong position. Eventually I decided it was a ladies hat box style suitcase. Those rodeo folks take their Stetson hats pretty seriously!

Have we decided on the model of the Guild guitar? Is it a thin body or full depth?

Single pickup, no block inlays, (venitian? not sure) cutaway, harp tailpiece... could be a Starfire I. The absence of chesterfield logo bothers me though.
