Any disadvantages to the High Gloss finish? Probably lets the wood breathe a little less right? Thats about the only thing i'm not wild about that in the small hairline crack but it seems like that shouldnt be a problem. what do you guys think?

Hey Skeets, also consider the DV-52. Great rosewood dread, best bang for the buck in many opinions and there's one for sale in Ohio on Ebay from one of our regulars.

Skeets,

Welcome aboard! If you're looking for a nice dreadnought don't forget Rosewood back and sides! Especially if your just that special one!

If the high gloss finish in nitrocellulose (which is on most guilds) then check out adorshki's last post here:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=15002

The nitrocellulose, for a laquer or polymer type coating, is quite flexible when dry and does allow the wood to breath. As for the crack, it has been sealed so it shouldn't cause problems. Most importantly, you want to make sure the neck is in good working condition as a neck reset will cost many $$$. Also, cracked or loose braces in the guitar are also another issue to be concerned when buying a vintage instrument. Body cracks, while not ideal, are mainly cosmetic, and once sealed, will not cause problems.

Thank you so much for the help guys. I would pull the trigger If I was sure about the guitar, i am so skeptical of buying online. If I was assured it was in great shape I would probably do it.

What do you think about the newer dv-6's as compared to the dv-52 it is rosewood back and sides as well at very affordable price new for a little over $800.

I can vouch for the D25 without hesitation after getting the GAS so bad as a result of acquiring one, but as far as Joe's remark concerning the arch back (If Joe would be so kind as to allow an incompetent knewbie to challenge his input  ) and after trying both, I would suggest that the type of back you may appreciate more will vary depending on the music style you are attempting to achieve on that particular guitar. I, for one appreciate the almost "squaky" punch coming out of my D25BR all mahogany, flat backed which in my opinion, sounds more "authentic" with some old classic blues that I favor....
On another hand, I reckon the arch back seems to "mellow" the projection more evenly across the spectrum of frequencies and is also more readily available for purchase, as those "flatties" are knocking louder and louder at the door of endangered species....
And from a newbie to another: welcome and go for it, you will not regret it!!!

There are many people here who have the DV6 and love them. Absolutely love them. When I was looking for my D25, I played a new Tacoma DV6 ($1000) and was not impressed. It did not have the boom, projection, or the vintage tone I was looking for. I am sure that after a few years of constant playing, that guitar would sound much much better. For me, I wanted an older instrument that was seasoned a bit. I wanted the wood to have time to open up, so I could get a nice full sound. An older DV6 will sound better than a new DV6, not due to construction, but to the aging of the wood.

skeets,

I recently bought a D55 online, without any real problems. Yes I had to dress down the frets when I recieved it, as it was re-fretted at some point and they put in like really high frets for some strange reason.

I guess from playing my D6 I kinda "knew" how this would sound and was able to take the plunge without any worries.

Maybe there is someone on LTG that is near to you, or you can find a shop that at least has a few Guilds so you can get some idea of sound.

If you have your wits about you, and LTG lookin' over your shoulder, you should consider ebay for sure. It's definitely "safer" than craiglist and likely cheaper than an actual store in most cases. Using Paypal - they do not release funds until you get the merch and are happy with it. The "best" of course is to buy direct from someone here.

As to the Guild for you in that range - I've only had direct experience with two ends of the spectrum so to speak - my D6 and the D55. The D6 is a hog and has a great tone, slightly muted perhaps compared to the rosewood dreads, but you can certainly spark it up by putting something like Tusq bridge pins in it.

If you have $900 to spare you can do better than a D6 for sure - but I have not played any of the inbetween myself. I do know that the folks here on LTG can be trusted implicitly.

One of the biggest helps to me has been this mash site that pulls all info from craigs and ebay into one handy format for searching.

thanks man appreciate the insight. I thought dv-6's were all rosewood back and sides and the dv-4's were hogs, I could easily be wrong though. Still searching the guy on craigslist wants $600 for his d-15 (small repair on the top and pro inspected) I think thats overpriced and I can do better. I really do appreciate everyones insight, I am learning a lot about guilds in a short amount of time. I have been playing for years but haven't delved into guilds until now.

Enjoy the hunt, skeets. Don't rush. If you have an opportunity to play some, you might want to take it.

thanks for that site to use for searching thats pretty rad, I'm a young buck and don't know how to create something like that lol. It helped me find out that that dv-52 is here in Columbus which is really exciting to me, maybe I can go play it and possibly come home with it!

Hi Skeets, WELCOME ABOARD! As far as new vs used, it's true that an older axe has "opened up" which is where a lot of tone comes from, and a lot of that is actually from the glue loosening up and allowing the top to vibrate more. The wood doesn't really age that much if it was properly dried in the first place, and it's moisture content will still fluctuate with ambient humididty for instance. My personal belief is that tone develops in direct correlation with the number of hours an instrument has been played. But there IS a certain peace of mind that comes with a brand new instrument (kind of like a virgin bride?) and the pleasure of hearing it mature under your care..... I bought all mine new for just those reasons although I'd happily start collecting used ones now if the pocket book allowed.
I keep hearing a lot of good things about the Tacomas but I can't find one out here to try! Just my 2 cents.
