Try as I might, I've not been able to track down the previous owner of this D4-12 to ask about the headstock. On the back of the neck, it appears that it could be totally new above the nut. Can't say that I've ever seen one like this.
Found it in a pawnshop and was drawn off the street and into the shop by the pickguard. I'm tuned in to those Guild pickguards.

Sweet sounding 12'er, BTW.

Looks like a pretty decent job. What do the back and sides look like?

Joe, does that center piece go all the way back?

Pike,

It does not.
If you look at the back of the head, you'll see pretty standard mahogany headstock material and a noticeable seam where the head and neck meet. Apparently laminated to the top of it is an additional 1/16" thick layer of mahogany which appears to have been painted black, with the natural color making up the center stripe.

I'll attempt to take some photos to see if I can aid in the description, but that's what I can see from here.

Did I say how good it sounds tuned down to D? :D
