About to pull the trigger on one of these. Has anyone here actually played one?

Reviews seem utterly impossible to find.

Any thoughts or maybe links to reviews I might have missed?

Thanks!

I haven't played one or seen a review. Others may have, around these parts of the internet.

It's quite odd as they seem to be for sale, etc., but no promo... thanks for your response!

You should be able to search this site and find tons of info as many have played and discussed it.

Thanks! I did actually do that a few times and didn't find anything, but maybe I was doing it wrong.

I assume that it is the equivalent of a NS Starfire lV. Same pick ups and features. If I was to get one. I would throw in a pair of the new HB-1s, just for giggles.

It's like the hardware of a 5, well a nicer vers, mixed with the body of a maple IV, except with a different neck, and much nicer binding... so a maple body with a Bigsby.

Trying to make sure it's not toooooo bright.

Using "newark" and "starfire" in the search box:

Thread about NS SF-IV here.

NS SF V here.

And there's more, so have at it.....

I did that... I'm looking specifically for info on the VI, not the IV or V. I appreciate your advice :)

I went through 5 pages of results and found a couple of very short things, and one long thread about the pickups of the SFs in general, but no real hands on reviews of the VI, which is what I'm looking for.

Thanks again!

I see what you mean - I cannot seem to construct a "newark" and "starfire" and (6 or six or VI) search either.

Thanks for confirming I'm not a total idiot! :)

I may be asking for the impossible... there literally may not be any good reviews online... which is a shame!

And thanks for trying to help!!

they are asking a lot of money for those, thats the reason nobody has bought one. You could get a SF from the 60s for $1500 on a good day, maybe less. might not be a 6, but still. As for reviews id just read reviews of the IV...gonna be a close comparasion there. FWIW, i played a NS S-200 T-Bird not long ago, and that thing was top quality. it was almost half the price of the SF VI though. Even just a NS SF IV with a bigsby would be hundreds less, no? Anyway, id think the tone and playability will be similar on the IV and the VI (other than the Bigsby of course). The VI must be super nice, cosmetically/aesthetically etc. Sweetwater has a few, they have a good reputation for helping people; could give them a call and see what they have to say about them, and ask if the price could drop possibly?

Thanks for that.

I would like to try a maple with the bigsby... that's kinda my interest.

Oh, and I'm in Ireland... sadly it's a pain to try before you buy with lots of gear here.

They have not been out terribly long and I am in gear reduction mode anyway...

This is what I found on YouTube for comparison:

https://youtu.be/Dw-cKdJhzK8 (NS SF-VI)

https://youtu.be/_0PV6rOVeAg (NS SF-VI)

https://youtu.be/bCTKGOyjzfU (Westerly SF-VI)

https://youtu.be/wQtqGzWbx3o (NS SF-IV Maple)

https://youtu.be/L-vIQZiCeMQ (NS SF-IV Maple)

https://youtu.be/hZy9g63jwWI (Hoboken SF-V)

Thanks for those :)

I had seen them...

The issues I have are that the two that actually show them are very... well one is from the floor of NAMM and is utterly brief and you can't really get a sense about what the player thinks of it... the other SOUNDS cool, but is commentary free and only showcases gritty sounds...

The others - none of them show the NS maple + Bigsby combo - the Westerly one is v cool, but I'm pretty sure it's different construction/material/pickups :(

Thanks for that though! I wish RJ would demo the VI. Or that Guitarist would do a video review. :)

The Westerly SF-VI should have maple back and sides with a maple neck having a mahogany stripe through it. The main differences between that and the NS VI are:

- headstock inlay (G shield vs Chesterfield)
- pickups (HB-1's vs anti-hum)
- Fretboard (ebony vs rosewood)
- Price ($3000 - $3500 or more vs $1500)

Fwiw, the HB-1 pickups on the Westerly version are considered by many to be one of the finest pickups ever made.

Keep in mind that a vintage VI will be at least twice as expensive, probably more.

I'd love to have a vintage one, but as you state, the prices are... very high - at least relative to my budget for a gigging guitar! :)

Thanks for the detailed info. :)
