I don't want to spoil the party, but how can it be a happy birthday when your ding-a-ling is 86?

I'm not sure, that you're ding-a-ling making it to 86, would neccessarily be a bad thing. :)

We had a big celebration of Chuck Berry music at last night's Open Mic.

For my part I covered "Johnny B. Goode" and "Sweet Little Rock & Roller". Others playing just killed on some of Chuck's other "Great 28"!

Yep, he's THE MAN.

It's better than the alternative.
Your ding-a-ling making it to 86 without you?
BTW, we're talking birthdays here, not "home runs", right?

For me, the ideal rock 'n' roll tone has always been the Chuck Berry tone. Although most people associate Chuck with a Gibson ES-335 (or 345/355) these days, most of Chuck's early recordings were made with two different Gibson ES-350T's, the first one with P-90 pickups and the second (after 1959, beginning with "Little Queenie") with PAF humbuckers. The tone he gets from both guitars is similar, but in my mind, it's just a little thinner with the PAFs.

He went to the ES-335 around 1963 (after his heyday), following his release from prison.

Anyway, it seems to me that a thin-line Guild hollowbody or semi-hollow with P-90-type or even DeArmond pickups (early T-100D? T-500? Starfire III-90?) would be a good tool to get into Chuck Berry territory, tone-wise. Thoughts?

Sorry, no birthday wishes from me to Chuck, I remember when he got caught video taping in the women's restroom of his restaurant. He had to financially settle with 59 women. Nice guy!

I saw him at the Liverpool Empire UK in June 1976 . My last week of High School . He was terrific !
The crowd were so enthusiastic that he played a 45 min encore. I can hear and see it now , in my mind.

I couldn't get a ticket and as I left the Office , a guy tried to get a refund at the Booth and I bought it from him.
Centre seats - upper circle ! He'd won two in a competition and his Girl didn't want to go . What luck . :D
