I put them on a bass thinking I'd get the "twang" of a "roundwound" with the silence of a "flatwound". What I found was while I liked the sound, but because they are ground, every wind has a sharp little edge and they play extremely "sticky". They were very hard to get used to. Maybe if I played them enough the edges would wear off and the stickiness would go away.

Let me know how they work for you!

If you're looking for a slightly darker sounding string that isn't a flatwound, try some pure nickels. They're all I use. (I use the Fender 150's, but have tried Dunlops, D'Addario's and Pyramids too, and all of them are cool)

Nothing against flats, I have Chromes on my X-170, but with only a neck pup, I didn't want to end up being too dark. I didn't know if the 1/2s would be a happy compromise. I have heard someone else mention the odd feel, Kurt, so maybe they aren't the answer.

I've used them and also found them a tad "sticky". I guess if you used them enough you would get used to the feel. My experience is that they really don't have a "Halfway" sound between flats and rounds. I like flats on an archtop, especially TIs, rounds on everything else.

I play flat-wound Chromes on the X-170 and love that feel but wanted something brighter for the Stratocaster. However, the 1/2 rounds are incredibly sticky -- the increased surface area of the flat surface creates friction without the offsetting smooth feel of Chrome. I wanted to love the half-rounds but finally got rid of them in disgust.

The guitar half rounds I tried are like sandpaper. Just absolutely terrible.

I have a set on my Starfire bass and I like them a lot. They don't feel as rough as the guitar version. A bass player friend of mine tried them but had the same rough comment.

I think it's back to the drawing board with this design.

Acorn, I think I have an unused set of half-round 11s around here somewhere. If you want them, give me your address and I'll mail them to you.

I note that two of my basses are currently strung with used strings gifted to my by an LTG member. Perhaps we should set up a string exchange :)

String exchange is a a great idea. How many times have I purchased a set of strings, thought they were amazing, bought a backup set or two, then decided they weren't for me? My string drawer is loaded with strings I probably won't use.

Thanks, LA, but after everyone's glowing endorsements, I'll let someone else claim them.
