I'm experimenting with heavier strings as I continue to de-tune and drone-out my sound. In tring to find a set of strings that are my preferred guages, it turned out that D'Addario's Light Jazz Half-Rounds are just a few ticks from perfect.

Does anyone have any experience with Half-Round strings, and if so, could you please give me a review of what to expect?

I would assume that "Half Round" are similar to "Ground Wound". I have a set on a fretless bass and I feel they're very "sticky". The ground edges of the strings seem to grap your skin as you're moving up and down the fretboard. Maybe if I played them more the edges would wear off and they'd become smoother. Let us know what you think!

How do you feel about going "all the way," with the D'Addario flat wound Chromes? They're just about perfect on my X-170 for me. Great feel, great warm jazz sound.

You mentioned a detuned "drone", what exactly is the sound/style you're going for?

I definitely don't want to go "all the way" because I'm a strummer. flats will sound way too muddy. I need to retain some brightness.

D'Addario describes the Half-Round guitar strings as "Bright tone with semi-flat smooth feel" and "Ground flat for playing speed and comfort. Heat treated for extra brightness." That sounds good to me.

My problem here is that I'm used to playing light top/heavy bottom strings on my electrics:
10-13-17-30-42-52

But I'm switching up most of my guitars to a round "G" and also tuning to D-standard. any set with a wound 3rd brings the high strings heavier and the low strings lighter, and I don't like that at all.

So when I got my X-50, I bought individual strings to make a set of 11's with a wound 3rd:
11-15-24w-34-44-54

after trying that out, I realized that maybe I should move the lightest and heaviest strings up one tick to:
12-16-24w-34-46-56

And you guessed it, nobody offers electric sets configured like either of these.

The closest two sets offered by D'Addario are the medium top/extra heavy bottoms with an unwound G, which would require my chasing after and buying wound G's and throwing them into the boxes.

I've used these ground wound , and didn't like their surface . They're really "sticky" on the A and E . Rubbish product and often priced out too !
I went from Chromes to TI flats and they're much better ( round , not hex core ) for
an acoustic sound . WRT the D'Add gauge problem ; mix a EHR350 set with a EHR360 set and decide if you want 32 or 36 as a D. That's as close as you'll get.
D'Add ground wounds are really cheap , so you can wear the waste ( 7 bucks a pack ) but the TI are 19 bucks.
