In celebration of International Women's Day (March 8th) The Squid takes a look at 12 women who probably know their way around the fretboard better than you.

Nancy Wilson, Heart
Chrissie Hynde, The Pretenders
Lita Ford, The Runaways/Solo (honorable mention to Joan Jett, but Lita is definitely the better guitar player, says the Squid)
Jennifer Batten
Donita Sparks, L7
Annie Clark, St. Vincent
Carrie Brownstein, Sleater-Kinney/Wild Flag
Ruyter Suys, Nashville Pussy
The Great Kat
Orianthi
Morgan Lander and Tara McLeod, Kittie
Poison Ivy, The Crampps

Bonnie Raitt, Joan Jett and Allison Robertson (Donna R) of The Donnas were most requetionly mentioned in the reader comments.

If Chrissie Hynde wasn't number one, it makes it invalid! On another note, I saw St Vincent open up for Andrew Bird at the Ryman last time I was in Nashville, and thought Annie Clark was absolutely horrid. No accounting for taste I suppose...

The videos that go with that list are pretty intense!! But I was surprised Joan Jett wasn't on there...

I cannot believe that Bonnie Raitt was an also-ran, sheesh!

Now that I think about it, me either Bill. Amongst other things, she plays a mean slide, and her (especially early) stuff was as authentic as it gets. Hanging out with Sippie Wallace as much as she did couldn't have hurt either I guess! Definitely belongs in this group, and maybe right behind Chrissie. 8)

Yes, but if you look at the list, and the videos, it's all intense rockers on there. Nancy Wilson is the tamest one on the list. Squid (or whoever) would probably argue Bonnie Raitt is not a "rocker" - at least not like these other women.

Well, we'll part ways there Sandy , I'll put her either even or just below Nancy Wilson...I mean Wilson scored films and such after the first iteration of Heart was done...and frankly even though she is way not my style, Jennifer Batten possibley could be top o' pile as well with her background, chops and schooling...Orianthi may be the heiress apparent to all, just as the Joe Bonamassa may be for the male side. Neither of them especially my taste (though Bonamassa does a mean Brit blues), but real players...

Awww, let the flames begin  At least Bonnie played Guild for a while

Walrus, we posted at same time...you may have the point that I missed here!

Oh man, no accounting for taste indeed! I think she's an amazing talent. And her guitar work with Polyphonic Spree was fantastic too.

I'm not sure what their criteria was but the point of lists like that is to generate buzz so who is not on it is more interesting than who is.

I'm surprised that with Carrie Brownstein, Sleater-Kinney/Wild Flag on the list no one has noted the Guild sighting(s). Old news for the S-100 folks.
