I am going from Hartford CT, to New York to Cleveland to Nashville.
Then back via Richmond and New York.

Any traveled like this.
Can you get away with a semi hard shell?
How hot does it get luggage area?.
Can you take it into the overhead?
Is too risky to take a high end guitar?
Advice?

I really was expecting something about dogs, not buses :)

I can't answer any questions from personal experience but... Watching charter buses get loaded and unloaded suggests to me that I would not use anything less than a hard case and I would not expect a guitar to fit in the overhead. I don't think heat would be any worse than a car trunk under similar circumstances.

Last bus trip I took was on a Chinese bus from NY to Boston. The inside was pretty plush but I don't know what the luggage bin was like. If the luggage area is not full, stuff tends to shift and bang around. If the passenger area is not full you may be able to carry it with you. Sounds like a fun trip.

Paul, I'd absolutely use a hard case for this, not a gig bag. If you want to be safe, get a soft case cover to go over the hard case to insulate the temperatures, but I wouldn't expect the luggage bays under a bus to get nearly as hot as a car trunk. Regardless, but I would not leave my guitar in there for extended periods. I think think the jarring and shuffling of stuff in the bay is your biggest concern.

Absolutely see if you can bring it on board.

Most likely that bus line has been shut down by now. If I were traveling on a chinese bus from ny to boston the safety of my guitar would be one of the last things i would worry about.

"Fung Wah" buses. They are notoriously accident prone!! In February, ordered to shut down service due to "safety concerns"...

my greyhounds (ok, one in particular who thinks he is in charge of ME) have peed on several guitars and amps in the past, so I don't leave my Guilds out when not playing them lol.

AARRRRRGGGGGHHH! That was one of my greatest fears when I was living at the last house with a couple of cats. Last time I heard, they were peeing on people's shoes.:cat:

Presumably that applies to the non-Guilds in your collection as well? (I tell stories about holding N string basses where N > 4 and the gorgeous guitars that are there because they appeal to your wife's aesthetics).

I used to leave a guitar on a stand until one particularly ornery cat peed on it, sort of. Luckily, he only got the strap. Unluckily it was a custom made strap from a friend who was a tack maker. Luckily, he only got the canvas and not the leather, so I was able to clean it well. Guitars are all in cases all the time now.

The cat owns the attic and the front outdoors. The dogs and people own the living area. I own the man cave (basement workshop, gym, computer room, music room, humidor) no dogs or cats or other critters allowed. Women only in time of laundry. No room for buses. :biggrin-new:
