I'm feeling a bit proud and maybe a bit too full of myself this morning.

I just counted up my instruments on hand and I am at the lowest level of instruments that I've had on hand in about 15 years. It's been a slow but steady grind but I am getting closer to where I need/want to be.

I still have 8 or 10 that for sure I'll let go and then I'll likely sit back and take a break for a bit. I gotta admit though, all those guitars provided a lot of companionship and at times I feel a bit lonely but I'm a big boy now so I just gotta deal with it.

Next on the paring down list is firearms and ammo, then scrap wood and tools. That will be a much easier journey for me.

You got a short list yet of what guitars you are gonna sell, Richard?

Not quite for sure yet but I'm thinking a 1970 D 25, likely my 02 F 50 burst, a GAD F 48 in black, and two pretty high end Martin Custom Shop guitars. The above is in addition to a '87 GF 25, a '79 D 35, a '83 D 212 and a 00 F 47 RCE all presently listed on Reverb.

Possibly more but I'm not sure yet.

It does take some time and you need to be in the right frame of mind to get it done but it is a good feeling at the end of the day. I'm in the same position now. I have probably a dozen pieces of gear, mainly guitars, that I will be listing soon as well. Getting it down the the real keepers can be difficult though.

Back when I played out in bands, I had multiples of every guitar I deemed necessary. Today, I only think of what style, sound quality, and feel I really need covered, and limit myself to 1 representative instrument of each. I'm down to 8 guitars (Les Paul, Strat, Tele, T100d, an acoustic 6, an acoustic 12, a reso, and a lap steel) If that can't cover all the bases, further modifications will. :geek: Only other guitar I wanted was an electric 12, but it would get such little use I ultimately deemed it unnecessary. The way I see it, if it doesn't get picked up and played at least once a month, like clothes that haven't been worn in over a year....it's heading out the door!

I once assembled all my stringed and fretted instruments (some in project states) together all in one room for review.

My wife was out, supposedly gone for the whole day. But then she came home unexpectedly. She came looking for me downstairs and found me with the hoard.

There was nothing in the hoard that she did not know about and had not seen before, but she had never seen everything all together in one place.

I became anxious when she started counting and asked her to stop.

It did not go well.

But we got over it.

Wow, a thread by Richard entitled "Guitar Inventory"! This ought to be good!

And....? 😁
I refuse to count myself, why? ;[]

This you must never do. Just assembling a few the other day elicited what could be perceived as unpleasant comments.

While on separate vacations - home alone - a few summers ago, I shot this, Bursts only, no plain or colors. Had it all put away like it never happened.

Or just hide it all in plain sight, it won't be a big deal after a while, that was my strategy when I had just a few.

My guitar teacher once had 65 guitars, iirc. I counted them up and wrote a chart for him ( for the whippersnappers here - that’s what a spreadsheet was called back then). His closet and two bedrooms upstairs were full of them. Then there was the living room downstairs, and the dining room and the front living room, where he gave lessons. Of course, no humidity control just open windows in summer spring and fall.

No downsizing allowed around here! Been holding at thirty guitars & three mandolins for quite some time now, but recently traded one guitar & five amps for one guitar. My wife was so glad to see the five amps go (twelve left), I got no grief & the new guitar almost seemed like a freebie! After the long & winding road of building up this instrument equity, if I let anything else go, it’ll be to get something special in return.

Good on you Richard. It is hard to let go of a nice guitar. It seems like you pretty much succeeded in your goal to play most of Guild’s finest flat tops to know what you want to keep.

I’m kind of doing the same except my criteria is more specific - smaller body, 1-3/4 nut width. I’ve tried a few larger and with a more narrow nut and that has helped me decide what I want to keep for the final stretch.

I have 9-10 now and ultimately want to get to 4-5 tops. My two larger ones (GV70, Orpheum SS) are truly superb but I know ultimately they will have to go due to shoulder pain.

However there are still a few I must try before I get to that point - the two Orpheum OM 14 frets and perhaps a CO-2 are the only ones on my want list. Once I can compare those I can make the final cuts.
