If you're in the market at that price point or so, how about a Dorado reso? I believe it is a mid '70's Japanese Gretsch import.

The best bang for your buck in a wood body resonator is a Gold Tone Paul Beard model resonator. I have a top of the line squareneck I bought used for $750 a few years ago. New, they are around $1200. All solid wood, with wood binding, then Paul Beard resonator put in here in the US. Available in a round neck. The cheaper ones are laminate back and sides.
