Guild Logo History...Is Today's Logo Really Retro?

I saw Tommy Smothers playing a Guild during a 1968 episode of the Smothers' Brothers Comedy Show, and it had the same headstock logo that is on today's new Guilds.

I was surprised to see this because I thought the "original" Guild logo was like the one on my two Westerly's (1973 F-47 and 1976 F212-XL). I don't know how to load a picture but I'm sure you'll know what I mean.

Can anyone tell me what Guild's original headstock logo looked like, when/why they switched to the one pictured in this link, and when/why they switched back?

Thanks!

Welcome. The definitive source for logos, and headstocks, through the late 1970's is The Guild Guitar Book by Hans Moust. (You might consider snapping up a copy if you can find one for under $30 since its "in print" status seems to be questionable).

The "center-raised" headstock has been pretty consistently used since 1964.

The "G shield" headstock logo was more or less replaced by the "Chesterfield" logo after 1957 although, like most things Guild, there are exceptions.

The "peaked Guild" logo also dates back to the early 1960's.

The label style in your example was introduced circa 1975.

Hans himself may have to chime in to answer any questions about what happened after 1977 or why things changed, if anyone knows.

I'm not sure I have actually answered your questions but I get the sense that you might ask different questions, given the information noted above.

Welcome, Rappde!

w/o pics or links, I may not answer your question. However, Guild has used different headstock logos on different models throughout its history. During the 70s, for example, low end models would have a simple silkscreened "peaked GUILD," more mid-range models had inlaid peaked GUILD with the "Chesterfield" logo, and high-end models have bound headstocks, inlaid peaked GUILD, and inlaid "G-shield" logo.

I think Tommy Smothers Guilds, which were upgraded versions of the D-50 that eventually became the D-55 "TV" model, had the G-shield, while your F-212XL would have had the Chesterfield. I don't know which Connecticutt models you are referring to... but the D-55 and F-50 would be the G-shield, while I'd expect the D-40 and D-50 would have the Chesterfied.

A good reference on the logos used in past years is Hans Moust's book, "THe Guild Guitar Book." Hans is a member here, and frequent contributor.

Thanks frono and Dave!

Tommy's guitar indeed had the G-shield and my two guitars have the Chesterfield.

Hans' book looks great and I'll keep my eyes out for an affordable copy...$100 used on Amazon doesn't qualify at my pay grade.

Can either of you help me figure out how to upload a couple pics directly from my PC to the forum?

p.s. Dave - nice fly fishing pics! All catch and release, or did any of those end up in the skillet?

Hey Dennis,
Pics can't be uploaded directly from your computer to LTG... they must be hosted on another server. I use PBase.com, which costs ~$25/year for a ton of space and no ads. There are lots of free photo hosting services (I also have a "free" Kodak site that requires a minimum yearly purchase)... maybe others will chime in with what they use.

Once your pic is uploaded to a photo host, copy the URL (web address) of the pic and paste it into your LTG message. You probably will need to add a ".jpg" suffix to then end of the URL. Then, highlight the entire URL and click on the "Img" button that is in the button bar above the message field. This will add the image tags around your pics address, so that it will show in the message. Test your message with the preview button before posting. One other tip... some of us (like me) still use rather slow connections (I use a dial up 56K modem at home)... so please downsize your pic (I find 800 x 600 with some JPG compression works well for me... I try to keep them to <250 kilobytes).

As for the fish... glad you liked the pics. I feel lucky to have so many wonderful streams within a few hours drive from SLC! All fish shown were released. I think I have only kept 2 fish in the last twenty years. Dave

Welcome to the Guilded clan. You'll like it here.

As far as posting photos, I'm happy with imageshack. It's also free and very easy to use, and I prefer working out of a shack, as opposed to....a bucket!!

Stay in tune,
Joe
