I'm not a fan of the smaller headstock that is on some Guilds.
It just doesn't look like a Guild to me.
What models and years have the smaller headstock?

TMG,
As I recall, the switch to the narrower "tapered" headstock on some models occurred in the mid-'80s... 1987, I think (tho' some "new" models may have gotten them earlier).

Call me fickle, but I would agree... I like the old "domed" headstock.

However, one of the favorite models of all here at LTG has the small headstock....the DV52.

There was actually one member here that stated the he thought the small headstock affected the tone of the guitar. That the small headstock model didn't sound up to par with the big headstock models. :) Tell that to the DV52 owners here.

My 2 American Guilds have the tapered headstock, and I would guess they used the tapered headstock throughout the '90s until the end of Westerly. My GAD has the more traditional headstock. I feel I am lucky because it doesn't really make a difference to me. :D

I 'grew up' with the old style bubblehead. Sometimes it will challagne a guitar case though... the really important thing is to have the rest of the guitar attached to it... Steffan

I can tell you ALL of mine feature tapered headstock. I think it was supposed to be one of the design details of the Gruhn-Walker era, mid '80's as mentioned earlier. I think it might be easier to list which post '87 guitars had the OLD domed headstock, I'm thinking D55 and up, (D60 Walker is narrow though, might be the "hallmark" design?) JF55/65/F50. Even then it looks like D40 had bigger headstock until???? and there's a couple of "super-sized" like on the Artist Award. And who knows (besides Hans) when some models might have changed (like D40 and D25, suspecting that was '87). I do know that in the back of my mind I now associate the domed h-stock with the highest end models at least until end of Westerly. Haven't seen enough "other" production to have sense of any further changes.
Tapered headstock can be an acquired taste. Especially if you own some!

Yeah try me!!!!
All I can ask, is in the event where the smaller headstock would have a negative impact on the sound (still trying to figure this one out :? ) then why is the DV-52 the best sounding Dread EVER?!!
But because I'm fair, 8) I will also admit that on a strictly aesthetic stand point, I favor the wider headstock. :|

Yeah it can. Back in the early 70s, my wife wanted to get me a hard case for my F-212 and went looking at the local store, with my father. The cases they had were too short because of the "dome." My father's solution would have been to cut off the dome. My wife (well now ex) had a cooler head and ordered the proper case. One of the few good things to survive that marriage-aside from three kids.

Just think how much better the DV-52 could have been, if it had a larger headstock.

No doubt the greater mass of the domed 'stock served to dampen some of those pesky standing wave forms generated in the neck during heated jam sessions. With the DV52 it didn't matter 'cause it was basically just an awesome instrument and in fact they had to dumb it down some. So they put the "muter" headstock on it. It was that or dual pickguards, and the headstock was cheaper. But you didn't hear it from me.

I'm partial to these...but apart from the pointy 80's Heavy Metal monstrosities, I like all of them!!

I think I'm gonna have my luthier slap some more wood on the sides.

At night I write copy for E-bay listers. I need to avoid any apparent conflicts of interest.
So that's you on C/L too?.... How much do you charge them for help with an item description?
No, the C/L guy lives in ############# (prison rules forbid the disclosure of inmate addresses) . He barters for computer access time. I barter for old analog electronic stuff. :D

This is a veer for sure.. a very alert friend of mine picked up an old (60's) record turntable at a yard sale and pieced it out to audiophile collectors (in Japan) for around $3500.00. Look closely at that old Swedish hifi stuff if you ever come across any. Anyone ever acquired a Guild at a yard sale?

I almost bought an old Telefunken console radio/phonograph the other day. It was listed on craigslist, and after some emails with the seller, I found that she was nuts. But it was cool looking, and I remember how the old console radio we had when I was growing up rocked.

No yard sale Guilds yet...
