Hullo, y'all.

I don't often post over here. I'm generally more of a lurker at LTG.

I thought I'd tell y'all about the Guild I just put on lay away. You might find the story entertaining, I guess.

The other day I stopped by Guitar Center to muck about in their high-end room. Having just dropped my stepdaughter off at her grandmother's house I was killing time before driving to work. I had no intention of buying a guitar. I already have a GAD-50, which I dearly love. I bought that one used from a MusicGoRound that was advertising it online. I had played a few of them but bought that one on the basis of the reviews and the high esteem I had for the ones I tried.

I really like stopping by guitar shops and checking out what they've got. As my playing has gotten better since I started playing again I have seen my appreciation for different styles of guitars develop. I'm always looking for an opportunity to play a parlor guitar, or maybe a jumbo 12. I've wanted a twelve string since I was a kid. I love that full, rich sound. Whenever I stop at a shop and play I generally buy something - even if it's generally nothing more than a package of picks or strings. I'm a working schmoe that has to carefully tend to his finances so I don't go through guitars very often. I try to research the heck out of a major purchase, just to be frugal.

As I was leaving the acoustic room I saw a  Guild twelvestring hanging on the wall. The price tag read $350. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was a used, blem ( http://www.guildguitars.com/instruments ... 3813200821 ) Guild GAD G212. I couldn't see anything more than a ding and a couple of scuffs - signs that someone had owned it. The strings were rotten and there was no discernible fret wear. The neck angle checked out OK. There's plenty of meat on the saddle. The belly wasn't bowed.

Did I mention how much I love my GAD-50 - and the stunned reaction of the guys that play other acoustics when they pick up mine?

Holy Cow. I loved that 12. I did some of the cowboy chords, ran through a little groove I've been working on, did some p***-poor flatpicking and decided I had to have it. I couldn't afford to choke down the whole amount in one payment, so I used the poor man's credit card (layaway!) and put an electric I have up for sale. My fiancé's only reaction was "if you want it that much you have to have it." (She RAWKS!!!)

I can't tell you how excited and happy I am about it. I won't have the Guild in my hot little hands for another three weeks, but I will have it eventually.

I'm thrilled.

Here it is:

Anyways - thought you'd find it entertaining.

Thanks, all. I can't tell you how excited I am about it.

My Fiance has resigned herself to having to listen to me babble endlessly about it for the next few weeks - followed by listening to weeks of solid play. I can get a bit obsessive about playing at times.

She is a great woman. Seriously. I was divorced in 1998 and thought there was no way I'd ever fall in love again. I've been with her for two years now. In that span of time between the divorce from the first wife to this lovely lady I couldn't maintain a relationship past three months. I was quick to run 'em off.

"Oops. Personal foul. Hitting below the belt. 15 yards - and go find yourself another boyfriend."

Heck, other women would get jealous of my playing time. It was like they were jealous of the guitar, or maybe the attention I pay to it. I dunno. This lady encourages me to play and when we're at any kind of open mic where I don't have a guitar with me (stop by the coffee house for a cup), she'll talk one of the other players into letting me use theirs.

All in all, one helluva awesome lady.

Sadly the Guild doesn't come with a case, so I'll be ponying up a bit more cash for that - but I figure it's well worth it. If I wind up in it for under $450 after the case I figure I'm still doing alright.

Periodically, Guild GAD dread' style tweed cases pop up on eBay for decent prices.

Worth keeping an eye out for.....

Enjoy!!

That's exactly what I had planned. I'm curious about something though - is there a difference in the length of the case used by a 12? I would think so - to make up for the longer headstock.

I'm already perusing ebay as we speak. I wouldn't mind an older, beat-up Guild black tolex case from back in the day. Gotta keep the mojo workin', ya know.

I know that a typical Guild six string dread' is as long as most twelve strings, due to the headstock. Not sure how that plays out with Guild 12 string dread's.

Of course, working in your favor is the flat back on your GAD G212. Those arch backed six strings can give a devil of a time, to find a case that fits. Speaking of non-Guild cases, here....

Congrats! Those GADs sure are great. Had a GAD30 that got a loose brace and Guild then replaced it with a GAD30R. Both were/are great little guitars. Sturdy too...they can take a beating.

Since the one I bought is a factory second, I think I'm pretty much on my own when it comes to problems. I'm not too worried about it, though. My GAD-50 is a tank. I baby it but it has still taken a couple of pretty good whacks - and it's still golden.

Besides, I know a very competent luthier - at least as good as anyone Guild has on hand. He's a bit of a local legend in the guitar player community.

I couldn't find any problems with the G212 - but that's not to say one doesn't exist. I'm not all that experienced. If one arises I'll just take it to the luthier and use the whole thing as a learning experience.

Well that is just opening a can of worms.

Skippy, I see you are calling Houston home. I was just there this morning for work. Just out of curiosity do you have a favorite guitar shop in town?

Absolutely. I've got a couple that I really like.

Check out Fuller's Vintage Guitars - it's on the North Loop (610), on the eastbound feeder road just east of Yale St.

http://www.fullersguitar.com/

I love that place. They've got a great selection of acoustics and electrics, and it's mainly frequented by grown-ups. You won't have to listen to half a dozen teenagers trying to outshred one another there. The staff is courteous, knowledgeable and very friendly. Their prices are on the high side (MSRP), but I seem to recall them price matching a couple of Hercules hangers for me. Best shop in Houston as far as I see it. They're also an authorized Guild outlet.

There's another one on South Shepherd, just north of Hwy 59. It's on the northbound side of Shepherd. Rockin' Robins. They've got a pretty good selection there as well - although not as good as the selection at Fullers. One nice thing about Rockin' Robins is their high end room. They keep it under lock and key, and when you go in there, I'd suggest you do so w/ a proper sense of awe and wonder.

We're talking serious gear in there.

Parkers Music on the N. Freeway (southbound feeder road south of West Road) is pretty good for low end - midrange stuff. The highest end acoustics they'll carry will be Guild's GAD series.

As far as I know, aside from that it's pretty "meh" here. A few little shops w/ uninspiring inventories. The usual stuff.

Congrats on the new git SkippyX. I have an extra TKL case that fits my D25-12, so it'll probably fit yours. You can choose used (really cheap) or basically new (still cheap). PM me for more info if you're interested. They're both nice cases, and better than the bargain bin ones you'll find at Musician's Friend and the like.

This is my favorite guitar shop so far in Houston. I have seen others, but keep going back to Fullers. They do have quite a Guild selection. Prices seem appropriate and friendly staff. There is a new GC on Westheimer that has a decent selection of used/vintage Martins and Gibsons that I was impressed by.
