Re: 1977 GUILD D-25M RESTORATION - UPDATE #1 ADDED - NECK RESET

Interesting that it was necessary to remove and steam at both the 14th and 15th frets. I have heard that Guilds have a lot of glue in the neck pocket and the necks are notoriously hard to remove (same goes for Gibsons). Looks like it's going well so far... the scary part is over! I hope your guy will be using hide glue to put it back together! Keep posting pics if you've got 'em. I love this kind of stuff!

Great documentation of the work involved in taking on a task like this. What you can't see in the photos, however, is the care and dedication involved. Serious craftsmen at work. :!:

Kudos to the team,
Joe

Nice to know that kind of work is being done in the Northwest...just in case we may need these services. Here is a guy that seems to know exactly what to do... :D Steffan

Look at that gorgeous mahogany and spruce exposed after the neck removal!!!! Outstanding. This guitar is sure to be a gem (again).

I didn't see fret leveling in the list of things to do, but I'm sure Todd will do that automatically after he refrets 14 and 15. I can't wait to see the finished product.

And don't fear, guys... Steaming off the neck joint is exactly how this is supposed to be done, so the drill holes for the steamer are absolutely expected.

By the way, this was one from hideglue (a padauk neck on an old F-50R)... I don't know if he got away with one steam hole or not, but it did look like his came off a little cleaner.

In any case, it's no difference. Can't wait to see the end result! :)

Re: 1977 GUILD D-25M RESTORATION - UPDATE #1 ADDED - NECK RESET

 Well, I knew it was happening, But not sure what day, So.....I just woke to SEE THIS on my computer screen!!!! Quite a happy , though a bit scary suprise! and..WHAT AN EYE OPENER!!!!! I told Michael that I might have to look at this with one eye shut........But upon seeing the extent of care and concern that is being taken here, along with his craftsmanship ( THANKS TODD!!) , I can rest much easier. I KNOW she is in good , caring, experienced hands......and these photos ( THANKS AGAIN TODD!!) really support this many times over. I KNOW that she is caring and knowing hands.......I KNOW that we have put her in the right place. :D
This has been a BIG DEAL in my world....and , from way WAY down here, all I can do is WAIT and WORRY. But Dadthrash and Todd have certainly taken the 'worry factor' out of the equasion, and I am quite happy to WAIT until it is all well and truely done. NO HURRY GUYS!!! But Of COURSE ,....I AM EXCITED!!! :D Sooooooo without Worry, nor Wait.....all I can do now is ENJOY THE RIDE. and so....I AM!!!
THIS guitar will mean a great deal to me, and will be MUCH played and enjoyed. Its true, I already feel bonded to the 'old' girl, and cant wait to get ahold of her! ( Yes, there will be teary eyes! but happy and thankful ones!) We have MUCH music to make together!!!! SEEING all this happening before me is a real treat.....Adding greatly to my enjoying and appreciating this whole experience. ( THANKS Michael and Todd!) these photos, ( and all the ones preceeding this ) along with all this correspondence will go into a book that will document this guitars journey to anyone here who would like to see! When I take her to the Pub, Ill show off the photos to alot of the Musicians here who will take great interest in her story. Oh yes!!!!....THIS guitar IS A KEEPER!!! and will likely be my favorite!!
( But...dont tell DV52) I intent to PLAY this guitar silly!
For those of you who dont know.....I have had a serious accident some years ago , resulting in a very debilitating neck injury, that stopped me in my tracks physically, financially, career wise, and in many other ways as well. I do not get out the house much as a result, cant drive, walk with a wobble, etc....and the medication is often as bad as the pain. Some days are better than others....some worse. MUSIC , and PLAYING the guitar.....has been a GREAT HELP in dealing with my pain and loss , depression and disability. On days when I can do little else.... I can at least play the guitar, and Boy, do I play it!!! progress is made in little ways....and so the day is not a waste. Playing the guitar takes me out of the world of pain and loss....and actually cheers me up! I could not imagine going through all that I have been through WITHOUT the aide of MUSIC, and playing my guitars. In many ways they have made the difference.....and continue to do so. I cannot speak highly enough of the HEALING powers of music and song......I am a living example. I FEEL IT, I KNOW it! I am LIVING example of it!
The people that I have met, through this making of music.....They too have added much to my life....and made a positive difference. ALL are Blessings indeed. I KNOW that too!

THIS guitar......and all the goodness and the acts of kindness that already surround it, and have been shown to me in relation to it is SO VERY APPRECIATED by ME and my family.....words escape me now. Suffice to say.....I am feeling VERY fortunate to found you good folks at LTG, found Dadthrash, found THIS Guitar, having Todd repair and renew her, ......and eventually to one day have her here at my home. Alot of care and kindness , good old 'human decency" go with this guitar, I can fell THAT already!!! Some guitars can become 'members of the family'.......this one certainly WILL. And,... like a new member coming to the family,....her arrival will be marked with great joy and THANKS!
Enough of my ramblings..... back to the job at hand. Not much I can add....except WOW! I am VERY impressed by ALL that i see! Dadthrash and i, We had a laugh some weeks ago......both this guitar AND I are in dire need of a NECK RESET!!! At least NOW she is getting hers!!!!
Thank you all for looking in and your contributions here, they are much appreciated. And GREAT THANKS to Michael and Todd ( and the folks at Fretworks) ....You guys are making this a truely wonderful, all around experience. What you are doing , and have already done.....IS making such a difference all around.
I THANK YOU ALL!!!!!! :D SouthernGuild

Rock on, Southern! Your accident sounds horrific, but it's a truth about music-making and the people who share that with you.

Whatever's going on, you're not alone. You can take that to the bank.

Re: 1977 GUILD D-25M RESTORATION - UPDATE #1 ADDED - NECK RESET

SG,

Wow! What a story, on both fronts! Well, my hat's off to you and I say you can go ahead a move to the front of the class. Stories like yours are to be 'inhaled' and taken deep inside for the messages they deliver. I'm a firm believer in the power of perspective and you have proven my point. Wow!

I had a 'pretty good' accident a few years ago, myself, and I could well have bought the farm....but I obviously didn't. Like you, I know my limitations but I'm also extremely appreciative of what I CAN do as opposed to whining about what I CANNOT.

Thanks for delivering that message of light to all of us here. "You're a good man Charlie Brown!" Take care of yourself and make sure to let us all know what we might be able to do for you!

Joe

I didn't see fret leveling in the list of things to do, but I'm sure Todd will do that automatically after he refrets 14 and 15. I can't wait to see the finished product.
FYI - It is my normal procedure to include a Fret Dressing and Fret Leveling with any Neck Reset I have done on any Guitar, and it was included in Todd's preliminary assessment. Surprisingly, he felt we should wait for the "Final Product" to make to make that determination.

Best.

Re: 1977 GUILD D-25M RESTORATION - UPDATE #1 ADDED - NECK RESET

Thanks Joe :D Yes, It took me awhile to gain such perspective on this one, I was not a willing candidate for this.....I was Angry that it happened , unwilling to accept the matter at all, and wanted it FIXED ASAP!! ( nerve damage , right below the scull....difficult to FIX , Im lucky to have the use of my arms and NOT need a wheel chair!) but like yourself, I now truely value the MANY things I CAN do, and live within the limitations of what I cant. "Disabled"....has become "strangely abled" as i AM able to DO things I never knew that i could and would DO , BEFORE the injury. I do not let this injury DEFINE me at all....."I have it", it no longer "has me"! In many ways........strangely enough, i am richer in my mind and heart , ( and FAR more appreciative of so many things as a result) due to this accident, I have been a full time DAD to my daughter, now almost 8, ( Had I been working, I can SEE that I would have missed out on so much there) and my wife is , and has always been, just wonderful. so Yea, Ive come through the worst, and feel that I have emerged a better person as a result. LOTS of lifes lessons we just have to learn ourselves ,the hard way...if we care to learn them at all. ESPECIALLY when you have no real healty CHOICE! It has been a rough road, but as the circumstances , and situation have not changed,...... I HAVE, and THAT was the KEY!!
I have transformed.
Again, MUSIC, and PLAYING MUSIC has been crucial to this progress. Thats why I mention it, in relation to this guitar.....all the kindness and goodness that surrounds it, from those i have come into contact with in relation to it, is a good example of the MAGIC in the music, and how the MUSIC TRANSENDS the here and now...and becomes something ELSE. Me and THIS guitar will write some heartfelt songs someday.....and, I will happily share them here, and the journey just goes on and on. Music, and these Guitars have been a saving grace for ME. I know that they can help others too!....in MANY REAL WAYS! When I read of Dreads volunteer work at the hospice, I KNOW that such is making great differences in people lives ( Not just the patients, but their familys too, AND in Dreads life as well!..the pebble thrown in the water makes many ripples.......albeit GOOD, POSITIVE ONES! to SO MANY around).
I have gone from depressed, hopeless, angry...sad and sorry for myself.....to really feeling BLESSED! THAT is a huge shift in perspective! :D
As Dadthrash told me somewhere along the way........" YOU HAVE TO FIND YOUR NEW NORMAL", words like THAT , ( and folks like that!) are true Gems, and can SHIFT our thinking into a NEW and BETTER PLACE!!
Chatting around HERE, and sharing this Guitar joy, and GUILDMENSHIP with you all, is also a great help! so again, THANKS ALL! :D
OUR journey goes on.....and LTG is NOT just about Guitars. THIS is a special place!
I'm Feeling BLESSED indeed!......and, more than a little bit crazy for that decapitated guitar! Southern

Re: 1977 GUILD D-25M RESTORATION - UPDATE #1 ADDED - NECK RESET

I have a friend who repairs guitars, and have watched him reset two necks, a Martin and a Gibson. It looks like this Guild is being repaired expertly.

Very cool of Dadthrash to do this for Southern.

I bought Dad's Ceder Creek Custom case, and that was another excellent LTG transaction. I'll post photos as soon as I get more than a day off work. :D

Don't worry SG... minor changes can lead to major changes   ..And Coastie has been known to walk with a wobble more than once....as I'm sure many of us have too...The smartest thing I ever heard a Doctor say is "The biggest health problem people have is hardening of the attitudes"..coulden't agree more...always be open to small miracles ......sounds as if you've had a couple already.....so have I... Take care my friend....I'l like to wobble thru a couple of tunes with you one day.... :D
