So I'm filling out all these forms appying for jobs in The US, but whats the story on working there. Wont I need to apply for a green card or will frono just automatically stamp my application as ok ? (I dont have any drug or criminal convictions, known terrorist affiliations, nor do I own any firearms...)

In some states you'll have to show your green card and your NRA card  !

Joking aside, your future employer may need to offer a little assistance in that regard. Sorry I don't know all the details, but employers can file for some sort of waiver that allows them to "import" workers if their particular skills aren't able to be filled by other applicants who are already in the US.

You will need a work visa, which is filed on an individual's behalf by the employer (includes a physical and other requirements - differs by country). Here is a website that you might find helpful. Oftentimes, job applications will ask if you need sponsorship to work in a country. The sponsor is the employer. Most employers who 'import' individuals are international firms that have HR folks who know the work visa rules/regs and have a good relationship with the different countries' embassies. Send me a PM, Ian, if you want more specific info.

Best of luck.

P.S. One of the strictest work visa-acquiring countries I've encountered is Australia. Boy, oh boy....what a process. ;)

It's been a long time since I actually worked with non-U.S. citizens but my recollection is that there are at least three options:

  • Work illegally.
Win the lottery for a green card.
Have your potential employer do the paperwork that essentially gets you a work visa because they are willing to claim they could not find a citizen/legal resident with the necessary qualifications.

The latter can be time consuming and somewhat of a joke. The employer pretty much writes a job description that is impossible for anyone else to fill, advertises it for a week and then claims there is no one qualified already in the country.

I'm kind of fuzzy on this but I think if you are here on a student visa there are circumstances under which you can work while trying to obtain a work visa.

Good luck.

But it can be done Ian. Don't let it discourage you. And if you come to Texas and don't have a gun, we give you one!
