I officially de-activated my facebook account today. Biggest waste of time I've ever spent. I don't really care what your dog did, or that you have cramps this morning, or where you're going to eat lunch today. I'm sick of reading dubious stories that people haven't bothered to verify before passing them along as the gospel truth, mindless political rants from both ends of the spectrum, and a myriad of other opinions that prove they are like something that everyone also has one of. I don't want to play Farmville, or Castleville, or any otherville, no matter how many repeated requests you send me. And I am especially sick of reading stuff that should be intuitively obvious even to the most casual observer.

There, I think that about covers it. Now if I could only shut out the rest of the media as easliy...

OK, now for some much-needed Guild caressing. :D

Good for you! Someday, people will say: "Facebook? Why did we do that?"

I'd have to agree with the sentiment, although honestly I have not participated on facebook... I knew from the start that it was not my thing. As I see it, social media is the ultimate display of narcissism.

But, the good side is there too... I think for families that want to stay in touch over distances it's a great thing.

Ultimately, my biggest beef with facebook is how it suckers people (my family included) into spewing garbage and personal information about themselves into a place where I am absolutely certain it will come back to haunt them. Privacy is an important concern for me, but the facebook generation doesn't seem to care at all about it.

The only reason I'm on facebook is because my daughter signed me up so I can look at pictures of my grandkids,,,which I do once or twice a month. We live 900 miles apart so it's good for that. I'm not interested in what her and her friends,,, (99% of which I don't know),,, are saying to each other. The only responses she gets from me are via email or phone.

I'm only into social networking if its guitar related. 8)

I note with amusement that many of the complaints - especially unverified rumors and political rants - also apply to email accounts. But it is much easier to delete email without reading. I'm definitely not part of Facebook's target audience but only continue because there are family members who are, and have stopped communicating any other way.

Facebook? I don't even have television, much less a cell phone. No paranoia. I simply don't give a rodent's butt about your personal dramas, have no desire to be in touch 24 hours a day, and have better things to do with my time (playing guitar, for instance) than sitting around watching mind-numbing drivel and biased, untruthful news reporting.

So that means you're not of facebook, right?... Steffan

IMHO Facebook is a tool. Its there to be used or not, as you see fit. I use it cause I have 5 kids all over the world from Florida to Calif to Japan.
Our non profit members use it for socializing and talking about their dogs wagging their tales etc. There's always pictures of dogs doing silly stuff. This is the kind of stuff we do not put on our official web page cause we maintain a non opinionated stance.
Funny thing is when I was building our web page I had the choice of adding a forum and chose to avoid it. And then came Facebook to fill the bill. So our web page is for info and FB is for socializing.
I guess there's nothing in this world that's all good or all bad. Depends on what you do with it. Playing a Guild is good. Banging someone over the head with a Guild is like not so much. Anyway that's my 2.5 cents. :)

A little long, but...
Back in January, I was eager to watch the national championship game between Alabama and LSU. Cindy pointed out that I could watch it on my computer for free as a Facebook member, something I vowed I would never become (lack of interest, etc.).
I was determined to watch the game so I jumped through all the necessary hoops, only to find in the end that I couldn't watch it anyway without the necessary cable-related equipment or something silly like that.
I ended up listening to it on the radio and my team was slaughtered (glad I didn't have to watch it!!) But then, I was on Facebook!!!
I found out rather quickly that it's there and good for those who want to do that sort of thing, but, to paraphrase an old favorite.... it ain't me babe. no, no, no, Facebook ain't me babe. It ain't me they're looking for....babe.

There's just so much time in the day....

My 2 cents,
Joe

Even the news media are hopping on board now. It's almost as if being on Facebook legitimizes the info. "If it ain't on Facebook it didn't really happen".
WTF?

Well, I have to say I use Facebook a lot and find it very useful to stay in contact with all my relatives and friends around the world. However, there are rules. Only connect to friends that are really friends and not every man and his dog you ever met. I ignore many of the invitations I get. Also set your permissions correctly, who can see what and what you can see. All those Farmville crap can be blocked very easily. If you don't like somebody, just disconnect from them later on. So easy. So like every new tool, you need to learn how to use it. I don't know for instance why in the world I would need Twitter, that is such a tool that I don't understand. But Facebook? Very nice for me! For people who I know in person and whom I trust.
My 5 cents,
Ralf

It's obvious here that I can be really boring. But at least here I have pictures of Guilds to share. And to some, I do live a boring life (according to my teenage children anyway, but I like it). I can't possibly see where I could contribute anything to facebook, so I stay away. I kind of see it like a comedian I heard once when he said "I could never have an affair, why would I want to dissapoint another woman?" Ho Hum

I use to hear from my family in N.Y. via telephone a few times a year. Now I never hear from them. My niece and I use to call and exchange birthday greetings as our BD's are a day apart; separated by alot of years though. We always exchanged BD cards as well. This year? Nothing. And nothing on Facebook either. I think self-centeredness got in the way.

Gypsy does FB but not me. I couldn't care less.

Peace

I still have facebook. I use it to keep in touch with friends I don't see that often, as well as a small group of members from a car related forum I'm on (we essentially use facebook for veering since apparently other forums frown heavily on veering for some reason :? )
and yes, for the most part, I could care less about unverified stories, stupid common sense ideas in picture form, political rants
I will admit that I do post random pictures on facebook every once in a great while, although said photos usually have comedic value (or I wanted to share a pic of the most awesome PB'nJ ever made by me because I was hungry at 3:41 AM  .)
I will admit, that overall facebook is a waste of time. (I stopped doing the games after I realized I was wasting a crapload of time doing absolutely nothing productive, which was really soon after I started them.) Who would waste their day feeding virtual crops or putting a hit out in mobville or building a castlevlle/ cityville/ carville? Much less spend real money for these games?
